Sorry, but it will not make sense if the main character and the one that the manga drives its title from will die a tragic death after centuries of lonliness and sufferring. With Yuuki knowing that the man that she loves is going to die for her sake, I can only see her trying her damnest to save him. It's also likely that Zero will end up lending her a hand. The charcater development that I can see Zero getting before the end of the series is him getting over his hatred of the pureblood and learning to co-exist with them.
I expect two endings: one in which Zero sacrifices himself to convey he hates neitehr Kaname or Yuuki, or the three of them suviving and learning to co-exist with one another.
First of all, no one forced Kaname to choose this path, he choose it because he wants it. Surely he suffered some hundreds of years but then he was asleep and had the chance to had a new life which was destroyed by Rido that killed his family. It was unfair, I know. But still, It makes more sense if he dies because that´s what he has been wanting for a long time. Yuuki´s words in previous chapter clearly hint that Kaname is tired. He clearly thinks that he should lend a hand to hunters by becoming a weapon like the ancestress, but mostly, he is doing it because he wants to.
Now I do not wish Kaname to die, in fact I stated before that I think its ridiculous. If he swore to live with Yuuki to the eternity, since only a pureblood is able to live that long, he should keep his promise. He should give himself a chance to be happy forever and to make her happy too.
Sure he has been lonely and suffering for much more time than Zero but there is a difference: Zero was not indirectly responsible for his family´s death, in fact, Zero PROTECTED his family (Yuuki) while Kaname was the responsible for the murder of Zero´s family, so why the hell would Zero "sacrifice himself to convey he hates neither Kaname or Yuuki"?!!! Zero did more good to Kaname than Kaname ever did to him, so at the end, he would still die for him?!!! What is the sense in that?
One thing is Zero dying to protect Yuuki, now If Zero tried to die for Kaname that would make him a stupid character plus would you die to protect the accomplice of the one who murdered your parents? I wouldnt. Even if that guy was a good person and mostly not after "raising" his sister. Zero has done good enough already and Zero also helped a lot of humans by killing Level-E.
Zero took Yuuki under his protection and if he wanted to payback, he would do the same as Kaname and when Yuuki was hurt, simply watch her die without helping her. Kaname does not know the pain of losing the most important person to you in the world, for he, thanks to Zero did not lose his sister, but Zero LOST HIS TWIN BROTHER. guess who was involved again That surely is more painful than losing a thousand ancestresses. Kaname watched the people he loved being killed but never had to help taking their lives like Zero, who had to suck the blood of his dying brother in his arms and carrying that burden forever. THAT I call painful and it can be more painful than having hundreds of years of humans badmouthing you and expelling you from their villages.
Kaname´s parents and the ancestress had a clean, painless death. Zero´s parents were murdered in front of his eyes, he was bitten to become what he hated the most and he had his brother dying slowly in a pool of blood agonizing in his arms. Kaname also does not know that feeling.
So in the end I would say that Kaname´s suffering never was and it will never be bigger than Zero´s, sorry. At best, they´re equal...
and what Yuuki bitch does in the day of Ichiru´s death? Leaves with her lover, leaving her best friend with his dead brother in his arms alone in the moment he needed her the most
If the three of them survive fine. If not, Zero MUST live. He is 18 years old, Kaname lived thousands. Ok he suffered hundreds, true, and its not fair, but it was not Zero who caused his misfortune, while Kaname is greatly responsible for Zero´s misfortune. Kaname helped humans? yes he did and they were monsters to him. But he never helped Zero, only harmed him, he harmed in the worst way the only human who always protected his most treasured person...is that a way to say "thanks?"
Its like you have two persons in a room that survived a massacre and then you say "kill the grandchild because his grandfather suffered all his life, so let the grandpa live and the child atone for hating the grandpa. Aleluia".
What makes you think that "Vampire Knight" is Kaname? Kaname has been portrayed as "king" since the very beggining while Zero has been portrayed as the "knight" of the "king and queen" who exists to protect them, like in chess, Kaname´s favorite game. VK´s last volume cover features Zero and Yuuki...isnt it Zero who is the knight? not to mention the hints during the manga:
Knight in chess is represented by the horse. We see Zero in the first chapters always with his horse Lily. We see Kaname´s official drawings with him always holding the "king" piece of chess & Zero wearing chains in his neck that greatly resemble a horse´s curb chains. It makes more sense to me that Zero is the Vampire Knight and if not, then Matsuri Hino is a great troll...
Anyway, nothing in this manga makes sense anymore, for LONG long time.
Yuuki is the one who should die for being so useless, indecisive, bratty, arrogant and being protected by two men during 18+ volumes.
EDIT: And Now that I finally read the translated chapter it is very clear that Kaname is tired of living. Completely obvious, really.
IA about Zero being the Knight, and if he dies I'm going to be really, really disappointed but at this moment in time knowing Hino's love for twists I think it is possible it might happen. I also agree that Zero has suffered just as much as Kaname - I feel like Zero's suffered more but that's probably me being biased because Zero is my favorite character in the series. I find Kaname to be an intriguing character but at the same time I often find it difficult to really like him because of the way he manipulates others, the feeling I have towards him is more often pity. I especially feel sorry for him in this chapter because as you said, Kaname is tired of living. It seems a lot of people didn't like this chapter and I get why because everyone is tired of Hino's endless triangle but I really liked seeing Zero get over his hatred for purebloods because of his feelings for Yuuki. Even though I think Zero's hatred is very understandable given everything that has happened to him, he also does need to let go of that hatred. I still think the series could easily be either Yume or Zeki in the end. All through the series Yuuki has clearly had feelings for both guys, which is exactly what has frustrated many readers, but I think that has always been Hino's point, that Yuuki is in love with both of them - most readers just don't want to accept this because they want to see their ship as the only one in the series. The real unfortunate thing is that Yuuki's characterization has suffered and she has ended up being an unlikable heroine to many --- I hope in Hino's next manga she is more careful about how she treats her heroine.
I think Hino has always said this was going to be a tragic story so if that is really the case I think that either Zero or Kaname will die, and then we will probably see Yuuki happy with whoever lives + I am sure there will be a moment indicating she did love the other guy too and will always remember him and his sacrifice.
Personally I'd rather Zero move on from Yuuki but seeing as he has been in love with her the whole series it'd be a bit ridiculous at this point in the story to suddenly pair him up with anyone else.
