I welcome the fighting too but I'm a bit annoyed at how some people only see this a fighting manga, like its some kind of shonen or as if meaningless gory bloodshed is "mature."
I too am a little disheartened that some people are still hung up on the old bloodthirsty Thorfinn.
The reason that got me hooked on this manga in the begining was the realationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd. It was pretty cool that Askeladd came to care for Thorfinn like a son, and it was pretty badass when he told him "That's how you kill someone you hate!". I always got the impression that violence in the begining was used to depict the lives of the vikings, the sufferring they caused and how a far cry Thorfinn had become from what his father had wanted him to be. I always thought that the manga-ka wanted to convey some sort of a message and never once he thought that blood and violence were cool or justifiable.
Back onto this chapter. Man, did I cry? T_T the last dozen of chapters were quite beautiful and thought-provoking. It's sad that this part of the story isn't getting the appreciation it deserves.
