Gabrielle Lockwood's aspiration for a quiet life with her test tubes and vials takes a turn for the worse when she becomes the target of a group of werewolves due to her research. So, when the handsome Sebastian offers to protect her, Gabby finds it hard to turn him down. However, Sebastian is more than his chiseled form; he is part of an Elite Group of Lycans that will do everything to protect the secrets of Aetheria. Sebastian Devereux is determined to prove to his father that he can lead the Night Riders, a group of Lycans whose existence is considered a legend. So when his father asks him to seduce a mere human, Sebastian agrees without hesitation. Except the woman comes in the form of a small, sarcastic scientist who likes to question everything. A small package of a human being who seems more interested in dissecting him than falling for his charms! What starts as a straightforward assignment becomes a complex dance as Gabrielle's inquisitive nature delves into Sebastian's world. It's all fun and games until a predator starts hunting Gabrielle. Now Sebastian must make a choice: continue his mission and become the leader of Night Riders or protect her with all his heart and soul. ....... Excerpt "I can hear your heartbeat, Gabby," he uttered, his voice deep and husky. Gabby immediately frowned, unimpressed. "What are you insinuating, Mr. Devereux?" she steadied her voice, trying her best not to show the desire that sent shivers down her spine. The thought of him pinning her against the wall almost made her spiral, but she knew this would not end well—for both of them. Instead of giving her an answer, he took a step towards her. "I knew you wanted me, just as I wanted you," he said. Gabby pursed her lips as she tried to take in the small distance between them. She lifted her gaze and stared at his silver-gray eyes. "You must be losing your mind, Mr. Devereux. Being confident is one thing; being arrogant is laughable. Not everyone wearing a skirt likes to spend time in your bed." Some of them wanted to see how fast his wounds heals, she thought as she convinced herself that she was here to study... him. He chuckled, amusement flashing in his eyes. "One, you are not wearing a skirt. Two, I do not want you to spend time in my bed." His gaze darkened as he took another step towards her. "I want you here, right now, in the middle of my office—on my table, on that plush couch, the shower, and against the wall. The bed is for resting, Gabby and trust me, I want to do a lot of things with you, and not one of them involves resting in my bed."

Oh, what a peculiar manga this turned out to be. It attempts to capture all the drama and seriousness of Orwell's "1984"... yet somehow lacks those very elements entirely.

    Story:
The narrative was entertaining, presenting a society driven by greed and centered around a game show. I've always had a soft spot for stories that explore twisted social norms in parallel worlds, and this one certainly fits the bill. Any desire fulfilled, provided you're a trivia master. It's wild, and written with that same intensity.

    Art:
Quirky. Extremely quirky. It definitely carries that 90s vibe, but oscillates between hyper-realism and grotesque exaggeration. Overall, it's enjoyable, albeit as bizarre as the rest of the manga.

    Characters:
As much as I'd love to claim they're original and exceptional... I can't. Most fall into the usual tropes of dystopian manga characters. Despite this, I still adored them; they were expressive and engaging. For instance, I found myself constantly drawing parallels between these characters and those in "20th Century Boys." They're somewhat similar.

    Enjoyment:
As mentioned, it was highly enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend this if you're interested in themes of corrupt governance, rebellion, and, of course, game shows. The author clearly strives to emphasize just how warped and absurd the depicted world truly is.

National Quiz is undoubtedly a peculiar and unconventional series.
The concept alone distinguishes it from the majority of published works. In this world, Japan is governed by a quiz show rather than elections or a stable government.
What unfolds thereafter is a narrative that embraces this premise and reimagines the world in such a way that this idea doesn't feel absurd at all.

While the story is captivating and the characters tolerable—well-rounded but not particularly deep, as this isn't a psychological drama—what truly sets this series apart is its extraordinary art.
The world of National Quiz offers ample opportunities for visual spectacle (given that the quiz show itself is flamboyant), and Katou takes full advantage of this. The art style is slightly eccentric, meticulously detailed, and quirky. Each character looks distinct, with highly expressive faces.

A crucial aspect is the strong lines in the artwork, combined with a coherent panel structure, ensuring you won't lose your place on a page. This clarity ensures you always understand exactly what's happening in each image.

Overall, this is an unforgettable masterpiece that anyone deeply interested in the medium of manga should read.

Kokumin Quiz is a truly unforgettable manga, boasting stunning art and a story that hits hard. Despite being over 30 years old, it remains strikingly relevant to today's world.

It presents a bizarre and grotesque game show where random winners dictate the laws and essentially govern the globe. At first glance, this premise seems absurd, but it serves as an unmistakable metaphor that leaves a strong impression. The narrative parallels Japan becoming the new America, dominating the world and enforcing its will on others.

The plot delivers precisely what it promises—no unnecessary stretching or cliffhangers, just a consistent and energetic pace. It begins with an episode of the quiz to establish the tone and reveal the harsh treatment inflicted on participants, gradually introducing characters and conflicts that eventually explode in spectacular fashion.

The artwork is nothing short of mesmerizing. Characters are often depicted almost as caricatures, featuring more realistic traits compared to many other mangas. Some have monstrous or beastly features to emphasize their intense emotions. Each character has such unique personalities that are instantly recognizable through their appearance.

On a personal note: I finished reading it in four hours, and it left a lasting impact on me. I highly recommend giving it a try!

And a question for how long will the break take? It's been over a year now
And if he asks if I haven't read it yet for fear that it might be an abandoned novel 😔
