The Alpha's Fox Princess Mate

After watching the OVA, I was genuinely taken aback to learn that this manga had numerous chapters yet to be animated, which made me eager to dive into it. However, my enthusiasm was quickly dampened as I progressed beyond the initial chapters.  

This manga begins with a strong and unexpectedly inspiring tone. Kintaro is portrayed as a diligent individual who studies life itself, and at least in the early chapters, there is undeniable charm in his journey. Unfortunately, as the story unfolds, it veers sharply in an unfavorable direction. Instead of Kintaro continuing to explore life through various part-time jobs, the narrative becomes inundated with fetishes and what appear to be the author's personal projections and insecurities.  

The manga held so much promise, but ultimately, it settled for being both unremarkable and distasteful. If you're considering reading it, feel free to do so. I found myself stopping multiple times because certain elements either made no sense or the focus shifted entirely to bizarre sexual practices. Personally, I would recommend sticking to the OVA instead.

I recall watching the 6-episode OVA series a while back when I was just beginning to explore anime. I genuinely enjoyed those six episodes and always wished for more. Eventually, I decided to read the manga, hoping to find more of what I had originally loved. Unfortunately, after only about five chapters, the entire manga took an unexpected turn.

Story: 6  
The initial premise of the story is highly enjoyable and easy to engage with. However, as it progresses, the narrative becomes so convoluted that you might lose track of what you're reading. Each arc seems to culminate in Kintarou being subject to NTR (non-consensual relationship betrayal). While this may be a personal opinion, after the shift in writing style, I found myself losing brain cells faster than ever before while reading any other manga.

Art: 8  
There isn't much to say here. I thought the artwork was decently crafted, especially considering the manga is older than I am. The vintage art style shouldn't deter anyone from giving it a try.

Characters: 5  
It might just be me, but I disliked nearly every character in this story. Kintarou is the only one who stands out as likeable. Essentially, every other character comes across as obnoxious and overly focused on sexual pursuits.

Enjoyment: 6  
The start of the story was quite pleasant to read. As mentioned earlier, the writing style changes drastically, and the author fills the narrative with explicit content. This isn't inherently bad; however, the excessive focus on NTR can be off-putting. If you're not into that theme, you likely won't enjoy this manga.

If you enjoy NTR themes, give it a read.  
If you dislike NTR, consider reading only the first five chapters or so and then stopping.

The manga becomes really poor about halfway through. Prior to that, there aren't any real story arcs, just standalone adventures that might last a couple of chapters. However, the first actual arc is fairly decent, but then it takes a strange turn. Oe ends up pretending to be a schoolgirl for an extended period and later moves to a new place where a girl constantly urinates on people, leading into a deep dive about human behavior and how everyone in society is flawed. Essentially, the manga's message seems to be about rejecting society altogether. It doesn't even present a strong argument, like "Humans only act kindly out of a hidden desire to gain something." It's a silly manga that attempts to claim the moral high ground.

Back in the 90's, after watching the anime "Golden Boy," I could never figure out why they didn't produce more episodes. After all, it was one of the most captivating and distinctive animated stories I had encountered.

Fast forward 20 years, and thanks to the vast power of the internet, I finally got the chance to read the manga... And now I understand.

After chapter 5, things take a very explicit turn rather quickly!

One of the appeals of the first 5 chapters and the anime is that Kintaro never quite manages to secure a relationship, or if he does, he leaves before anything serious happens. Unfortunately, after chapter 5, there's a noticeable shift in the writing style. Kintaro not only ends up with a girl, and multiple girls, but there are also scenes where he cross-dresses and engages in BDSM as a submissive partner.

I can't help but wonder if the writer, after chapter 5, was pushed by their editor to include more adult content? Or perhaps they were in college taking a psychology 101 course? Regardless, you'll either embrace this change or find yourself disliking it.

Golden Boy starts off incredibly strong, utilizing a girl-of-the-week ecchi comedy formula. Unfortunately, after literally 9 chapters, it shifts to an arc-based structure and transforms into hentai territory, delving into "harder" fetishes like NTR, BDSM, and mind control. The protagonist often remains passive throughout these arcs. The setting devolves into a convoluted mess, relying on typical pornographic tropes to justify sex scenes. Most character development is squandered, and the series concludes abruptly, as if it were prematurely axed. Around volume 7, the manga regains some footing but doesn't hold back, turning a once-promising and important character into a naive psycho. It's also laden with social commentary, albeit superficial and inconsistent. This commentary presents two potential ways to improve the modern world: a mind-control cult fostering a personality dictatorship or a post-secular Buddhism with libertine sexual ethics. Ultimately, it's a massive disappointment and a waste of time. <p>

So, did you watch the OVA's and want to keep on reading the manga? Well, you probably won't regret it! :) Oe Kintaro is as cool as ever, even here!

First I'd like to say that I only read the first 65 chapters because I couldn't find any more at the time of writing this review.

Oe Kintaro - The Super Awesome Part-Timer! :)

There are two Golden Boy series: Lesson and Study series. The Lesson series have only 9 or 10 chapters (each one around 30 pages), and they are partially adapted to the OVA (one Lesson chapter = one episode).

Later on, in the Study series, there are more chapters (with an 18-page average length and their stories mostly last around 10-15 chapters).

Let's talk about the Lesson series first:

Story - 10 - It's just magnificent! Oe is really funny and hilariously perverted (not in a bad way of course). You will find him falling in love with and helping many women to get back on the good track of life.

Art - 10 - Well, honestly here, it's just great. It's an old manga, but the character images are the same in every chapter/page, so you'll never find it troubling to recognize a character. The backgrounds are also well made, and there are some boobs. :)

Character - 10 - In the beginning, you might think of him as a dumb pervert, but you are wrong. The way his character comically progresses through the lessons, where you can see what he really is like and what he values the most are the really important things in life. He will make some mistakes, but he will redeem ten times more. With the jobs he gets, he progresses in each way.

Enjoyment - 10 - The Lessons are really fun, especially not being really connected (just a few times the other chapters are mentioned), and you just can't stop reading. His reactions, the reactions of the environment, it's just overwhelming. As the lessons progress, you'll enjoy even more! :)

Overall - 10 - Simply awesome! :)

Now, let's talk about the Study part!

Story - 8 - Although it's still Oe, we'll find some loss of ideas here. He still does things the way he used to, it's just that there are some really unpleasant and freaky moments, and you'll find some of the characters really evil. A few times I found myself looking away because there were some things going on that I didn't want to see/read about. A big minus is also that Oe appears less here, as the new background characters get more pages/chapters for themselves. Still, it's the Golden Boy (although a Golden Girl will appear later, she ain't golden at all.)

Eight might be a bit high of a grade, but it deserves no more or no less than that - still you'll judge for yourself (sometimes you get really annoyed, but mostly you'll just want to keep reading).

Art - 10 - The art here is pretty much the same as in the Lessons, but you can find a LOT more of boobs, penises, and vaginas (censored in a weird way). That's all about art.

Character - 9 - It is still Oe, but you'll find that his perverted manners have gone out of control here. Even though he's still Golden at the end of each story (around 10 chapters), in between he'll do some really weird things, some of which I approve, and some of which I don't. (SPOILER - He'll even pretend to be a 17-year-old girl). He keeps writing things in his notebook, but he feels a bit different (a bit off.)

Enjoyment - 8 - as mentioned before he'll do some really weird things, and some really perverted characters will appear and literally do everything their dirty minds can think of. So, it really feels sad/disgusting at some points/chapters/pages. And the extra sex thing - there's really a lot of it in the Study series.

Overall - 9 - 'Nuff said in the previous sections.

Because of the great story of the Lessons, I can forgive the LQ story of the Study series. The art is kinda the same. Kintaro has questionable qualities in the Study series, but I forgive him, for in the end (every end, of each chapter, both Lesson and Study) is GOLDEN. :D The enjoyment is a bit spoiled by the Study series, but it still offers some fresh material and a lot of fun material (though not as much in the Lesson series).

Sorry if it seems illogical while reading, I was kinda tired, and I tried being objective and not revealing too much.

Oh boy, what a letdown... here we go. Throughout the manga, you'll encounter various fetishes that often lead to humorous moments. Since this is a world saturated with sex, non-consensual relationships (NTR) are bound to occur. Initially, it didn't bother me; I was curious to see how Kintaro dealt with these situations. To my disappointment, he handles them like a classic cuckold.

Philosophy becomes increasingly prominent as the manga progresses, and this is where NTR spirals out of control. The author essentially claims that if you're concerned about your partner having sex with someone else, you're weak and don't genuinely love her.

Now, I don't know about you, but I came here for comedy, an engaging plot, and some good material for personal enjoyment. What I didn't anticipate was being served an argument on why being a cuckold is supposedly commendable.

The author is the primary issue with this comic book.  
As you read through it, you can't help but notice — or at least that was my impression — that the author has crammed every page with sex scenes and sexual references, as if obsessed.  
The entire comic appears to be a self-justification of the author's childhood notions about society and sex. It's truly pitiful.  
At some point, it becomes unsettling to encounter those childish dialogues on sex and society. You just hope the author decides to stop talking about sex — even if only for one chapter.  
This is a work that aims to be mature but seems to be crafted by a teenager trying to appear cool by throwing in trivial ideas and superficial philosophy.
