Story: (8)
The narrative isn't particularly unique or groundbreaking. The central pairing consists of the owners of rival hotel chains, and the theme of love between adversaries is far from original. Nevertheless, my favorite aspect was that the uke didn't immediately fall for the seme. Instead, the uke harbors feelings for someone else. This was a refreshing twist, especially since most yaoi series tend to have the two male leads instantly drawn to each other.
Art: (8)
The artwork was impressive! The characters were depicted as strikingly beautiful. However, it only merits an 8 due to the peculiar sensation I experienced during the sex scenes. Personally, the art felt somewhat awkward in those moments. Aside from that, the backgrounds and character designs are truly commendable. A couple of characters appeared quite similar (the protagonist and his brother), with the main distinguishing feature being the shade of their hair. Beyond this, the art was executed exceptionally well!
Character: (8)
This was my favorite element of the series. Shou, the uke, isn't the overly naive boy who falls head over heels for the seme right away. Instead, the cooler of the two is the uke, while the one pursuing is the seme. This aspect won me over because it was novel to me. So far, every yaoi series I've encountered featured innocent ukes and excessively macho semes. Bitter diverges from this norm, and I thoroughly appreciate it!
Enjoyment: (9)
I devoured the entire series in one day since it's relatively short and highly enjoyable. While the sex scenes felt a bit awkward for me, the rest of the story was fantastic!
Overall: (8)
A concise, yaoi-driven, smut-filled series that is quite good! If there's anyone weary of conventional yaoi tales with overly cutesy ukes, they will likely enjoy Bitter just as much as I did! :)
