_Dragon Half certainly had immense potential to become a great work in the gag humor genre and even a MASTERPIECE OF FANTASY with complete adaptations. However, the only downside is that it's sad to know very few people are aware of this work...
• Story 7.7
I'm not typically into gag-humor manga, but the story is genuinely fun and manages to convey a certain message. We follow Mink, a half-dragon girl who wants to marry a typical gentleman with blonde hair called "Dick Sauser." She embarks on a journey to obtain an artifact that will help her with her problem. However, because she is half-dragon, people have certain prejudices against her, including the kingdom where Dick Sauser lives. His allies end up being against Mink, and even Sauser himself opposes her at various points in the story. This dynamic drives the plot forward. But I wonder, why the FUCK would someone with such cool powers want to give in to such...normal desires? Does it mean that sometimes we give in to our desires for "lesser" things? Maybe I'm exaggerating, but that's how it feels!
• Characters 8
The characters are pretty cool too; there isn't much more to say. Mink is dedicated, her father is a complete pervert, and her companions are worth their weight in gold.
• Art 8
The art in Dragon Half is quite delightful to look at. You'll often find cute expressions, girls with thick thighs (almost all of them seem to have them if I'm not mistaken), and panels where the characters are kind of 'comically detailed' from time to time. The confrontation panels have a very comedic aspect without losing the charm of gag humor.
• Enjoyment 9
Dragon Half is simply a very fun and enjoyable adventure to read. It works well with its genres, leaving you grateful and laughing. I had a very pleasant experience with this work, and any time I finish it, I feel satisfied.
STORY SECTION: 7/10
Set in a JRPG-inspired world, where elements of the middle ages (castles, dungeons, wandering monsters) blend with modern-day features (airplanes, music concerts, televisions), the characters wear attire reminiscent of Japanese medieval fashion, characterized by leather and revealing outfits.
Mink, a Dragon-Half (half dragon/half human) dressed provocatively, harbors feelings for a bishounen dragon slayer/pop idol. She embarks on a quest to find a magic potion that can transform her into a regular human girl, having inherited horns, fiery breath, and a reptilian tail from her dragon mother. However, various parties seek to harm her—a lecherous king intent on seducing her mother, a princess determined to secure the bishounen for herself, the bishounen himself due to his dragon-slaying nature, and minions of the supreme demon lord.
Despite being a slapstick/erotic comedy, the series incorporates intriguing story elements and revelations that make it captivating.
ART SECTION: 5/10
The focus lies on comedy and fan service, leaving everything else intentionally amateurish. The visuals are overly simplistic, and characters transform into chibi versions during humorous moments, which account for about 70% of the runtime. During ecchi scenes, the female anatomy improves significantly (demonstrating the mangaka's skill), offering decent fan service. Even so, the girls appear kawaii (large eyes, innocent expressions) rather than realistic, so don't anticipate Playboy-level realism.
CHARACTER SECTION: 8/10
All characters are absurd; no serious personalities exist here. Each character humorously embodies JRPG stereotypes, encompassing specialized fighters and wizards in terms of classes and representatives of various races (human, dragon, elf, ooze, demon) along with hybrids (half dragon, half ooze). Major characters boast compelling backstories and development, all vividly fleshed out. For a comedy, it boasts a large and engaging cast. The love-struck Mink, her unfaithful womanizing father, her lesbian friend, and her elusive love interest are amusing and above-average characters.
VALUE SECTION: 6/10
There's a moderate likelihood of rereading it, given its light and whimsical nature.
ENJOYMENT SECTION: 8/10
Depending on your taste in humor and ecchi content, the series ranges from hilarious to lukewarm. Personally, I found it delightful and enjoyable enough to desire more.
Firstly, as mentioned in other reviews, you shouldn't approach this manga expecting a fulfilling or original plot. It's a straightforward slapstick comedy, so the story serves more as a side dish to the comedic feast. That said, the plot is indeed rather basic... girl likes man, a barrier separates the couple, leading her on an epic journey to find a conveniently magical key to break the barrier, and so on. It's simple, unoriginal, and altogether uninspiring, but since it's a comedy, the lack of depth doesn't detract from the enjoyment. The art is fairly poor, but considering its age, it probably wasn't bad for its time.
The characters are... in one word... RETARDED. Every character in this short series is a total idiot, and the only reason the protagonists succeed is that the antagonists are even bigger fools (though the elf raises some doubts). Of course, their sheer idiocy is what makes the series so enjoyable. They bumble their way through the land, picking fights with demons, arguing among themselves, or drooling over Dick Sauer (who claims the title for the funniest name in the universe), and you can't help but want to slap them silly each time—while grinning widely, of course. Each character is simple, one-dimensional, and undeniably stupid, yet astonishingly likable.
Overall, it's a genuinely enjoyable manga. The humor is so bold and slapstick that you can't help but laugh and keep reading to see what they'll do next. The sheer madness of it all makes this manga hard to forget. Read it if you're in the mood for a few laughs—you definitely won't be disappointed.
