Kellen Woods grew up in a world far from ordinary. By the time he could walk, his parents had already secured several dangerous gates that threatened their hometown’s safety. By the time his sister was born, they were renowned worldwide. The world eagerly awaited the moment Kellen and his sister came of age, curious about the powers they would awaken. His sister mirrored their mother in both power and class, while Kellen awoke one day to realize what it meant to be special in a family under global scrutiny. But not in the way he had hoped. Awakening with weaker powers than his formidable parents wasn’t uncommon, but when his younger sister matched their parents’ class, anyone would feel overshadowed. And Kellen, never one to seek handouts, left the comfort and security of his hometown to prove he was more than the weakling everyone perceived him as. Kellen headed to the front lines, where gates typically emerged. There, he worked tirelessly until no one could doubt his competence. He became so skilled that even with his lower class, people still sought his help. Yet, Kellen remained humble. He learned a crucial lesson on the front lines: classification only mattered if you returned from the gate alive. Otherwise, listen to those with experience; they decided who survived. But now, Kellen felt weary. He had exorcised his demons, and the fast-paced life on the front lines no longer suited him. He yearned to go home, buy a house, perhaps find a nice man to settle down with, and live a normal life. All the while, the yellow eyes he encountered on the front lines haunted him, no matter how hard he tried to forget them. Especially since the Esper they belonged to refused to let him go.
