In short, the plot revolves around a delinquent who abruptly confesses his feelings to an "ordinary" girl. She finds him repulsive and wants nothing to do with him, yet she suddenly realizes she has feelings for him after rejecting him. The rest of the manga primarily explores the highs and lows of their relationship and the challenges she faces dating a guy like him.
Sounds quite typical, doesn't it? I should mention that the summary is the best part of this manga. Everything else deteriorates from there.
Firstly, characterization. Terrible. Sonoko has to be one of the worst heroines I've encountered. The entire story hinges on her feelings of shame and embarrassment about having a delinquent boyfriend. She repeatedly hurts him and goes to great lengths to conceal the fact that he's her boyfriend. She constantly questions how and why she ended up with a guy like him, how shameful he is, how her life would end if anyone found out, and so on. This could have been tolerable or even understandable at the start, but it continues throughout the entire story. In fact, the increasingly hurtful actions she takes against her boyfriend drive the ENTIRE story forward.
Narusawa (the delinquent boyfriend), on the other hand, is a bland character. Initially, we're never shown why he fell in love with Sonoko. That, in itself, isn't a major issue as many short shoujo stories are like this. The problem lies in how scripted his actions feel, as though he exists solely for the sake of the story. He appears, falls in love after seeing her for the first time (when he had just finished beating some people up and she was utterly terrified), acts like a total fool in love half the time, while the other half involves being "stunned" and hurt by yet another foolish thing Sonoko does, then walks off looking depressed until Sonoko runs to him in tears and he's instantly all smiles again in his foolish glory. It's all very one-dimensionally robotic. Like Sonoko, this is also how he remains throughout the entire story.
So, does this manga have any redeeming qualities? There are a few, which is why I'm giving it a 2 instead of a 1.
When you strip away Sonoko and the horribly bad romance, the manga has a couple of funny moments. Narusawa and his delinquent friends are occasionally hilarious with some of the weird things they get into – mostly in that loser delinquent Yakuza-wannabe way. If you enjoy that kind of humor, a scene or two might save this manga for you. Unfortunately, Sonoko's constant whining quickly kills any joy you might have experienced.
Art-wise, it's not bad, nor is it particularly exceptional. Decent comes to mind. That's about all I can say about the art.
Overall, the only thing this manga did for me was annoy me immensely. If it weren't for its mere 2 volumes, I would've stopped reading before finishing the first. I should add that I read a lot of one-shots and short shoujo stories. I'm well aware of their flaws but still generally enjoy them. Love Junky, however, was simply impossible for me to overlook the negatives – not when the entire manga IS the negative side.
If you enjoy reading a manga about a shallow girl trampling on a guy's feelings and good intentions over and over again, then by all means, give this one a try. Otherwise, I'd skip it. There are far better options available.
* Yes, I realize this probably isn't a very well-written review. I'm just now realizing how difficult it is to write a decent review for a manga I find so terrible.
Story:
The plot is fairly straightforward and somewhat rushed at the beginning, focusing on how a fearsome-looking gang leader confesses his love for an average girl from his school. Essentially, that's the crux of the storyline, which revolves around the comedic and exaggerated tribulations of their romance and how they navigate its challenges. However, these aspects are secondary to the points I wish to make in this review. The ending does feel rather over-the-top and implausible, though.
Art:
This is the element I particularly want to highlight. At first glance, the artwork on the manga's pages doesn't appear especially unique, impressive, or refined—and that assessment holds true.
What took me by surprise was the mangaka's inclusion of shounen-style art for the main male character. Moreover, the way the mangaka portrays the characters' expressions is, in my opinion, exceptionally well-executed. Emotions such as happiness, shock, and anger are depicted with clarity, allowing readers to instantly recognize and understand them.
The intensity of the emotions is also conveyed effectively, capturing my attention for a few extra seconds more than usual as I appreciated and empathized with the characters.
Character:
Given the manga's brevity and its classification as a romantic comedy, one can expect limited character development.
Nevertheless, I appreciate the touch of realism infused into the narrative. Unlike many super-shoujo manga, the characters here exhibit genuine emotions, including negative ones, which means they must confront and overcome difficult situations—a refreshing change.
Overall: (7.5)
A highly engaging and action-filled manga (thanks to a few "gangster" fight scenes) that provides genuine entertainment, despite being short and lesser-known. While it may not reach the heights of perfection in originality, it remains a worthwhile read if you're looking for something to pass the time.
