When it comes to character development, the main character (MC) initially displays a detached demeanor, prioritizing his own thrill-seeking. However, his sense of responsibility is rooted in the ethical principles instilled by his beloved nun. Although he may not actively assist others, he is committed to shouldering the consequences, ensuring their well-being when he can.
Regarding the male lead (ML), opinions may vary greatly. He embodies true villainy, devoid of any redeeming qualities. He is powerful, apathetic towards human life, capable of cold-blooded murder, torture, and destruction if necessary. Initially, his goal is to kill the MC, viewing it as a natural instinct. Yet, an unexpected turn occurs when he becomes infatuated with MC. Ultimately, ML chooses to let MC go, and in exchange, MC vows to be with him.
Whether you love or hate ML is entirely subjective. Personally, I find him intriguing.
Rating: 10/10 for both the novel's storytelling and character dynamics.
Translation/Language: 10/10
There's a spoiler here about the complexity of their relationship:
The male lead (ML) comes to terms with his feelings later than the main character (MC), but still relatively late compared to what might be expected. The ML is more open about expressing affection, but they never say "I love you" throughout the entire story, even in the bonus content. I appreciate that the author avoided a common cliche where a significant event forces one character to suddenly confess their love. For these characters, their shared madness makes it difficult for them to openly acknowledge their emotions; it's not a matter of miscommunication or denial, but rather a disbelief in love.
Both the MC and ML are deeply flawed, showcasing different aspects of insanity. The MC has a childhood connection that grounds him, leading him to adhere to societal norms and hide his true nature as a magician. The ML, on the other hand, is a born madman, seeking chaos. Despite their stark differences, they share a profound connection and a desire for adrenaline-fueled experiences, making them seem like adversaries and partners simultaneously.
As the story unfolds, the climax of their relationship mirrors the climax of the overall plot, providing a satisfying "slow burn" experience. However, I do have a minor critique of the novel's structure – the unlimited flow thriller system felt somewhat hand-wavy and the resolution was a bit too convenient, with a happy ending that left a few loose ends. Despite this, the focus on the characters' relationship more than made up for it. Overall, I give this book a solid 11/10 recommendation.
A brief background on the main character, Zong Jiu, reveals that he once survived a car accident that left him unable to practice magic due to his reliance on hands. He's apathetic and was raised by a nun, who advised him to use others' expectations. Zong Jiu differs from the antagonist, No.1 (also known as the Devil or Mephistopheles), as he restrains himself to maintain control.
In terms of plot, there's a Las Vegas arc where Zong Jiu excels at card tricks despite his physical limitations. Another arc involves a vampire incident, an insane asylum, and the introduction of various characters, including a mole who follows Zong Jiu. There's also a hilarious revenge scene where Zong Jiu confronts the "doctor" from earlier.
The story has a happy ending, but for those who want more depth, the extras provide additional insight into the couple's relationship. Each arc is filled with action, surprises, and character development, especially in the Halloween arc featuring the Clown, Mad Hatter, and Snow White.
The ending leaves room for a satisfying conclusion, with the couple getting married off-screen, and other supporting characters finding their own happiness. A surprising twist involves Zhuge An being revealed as Gui Guzi, an undead character.
Overall, the story is an exciting blend of romance, mystery, and supernatural elements, with a mix of heartwarming and humorous moments. If you're a fan of this genre, you'll definitely find something to enjoy in this tale.
"I MTLed through to the end, and I must say, I absolutely loved it! I have a soft spot for a strong and captivating main character, and the relationship between the MC and ML was highly entertaining. The ending was satisfying too – the MC's choice and its consequences make this one of my favorites.
Just one curiosity for those who've finished: about the audience watching the trainees, it wasn't clarified who they are, where they came from, or what happened to them, right? I might have missed something, but it's been on my mind. Is there any additional information available, perhaps a spoiler alert?"
Additionally, I observed that the emphasis on the MC's physical attractiveness was excessive, and I couldn't help but notice that some of his triumphs appeared contrived. The novel often portrayed the MC as an über-competent figure, destined to succeed, but it felt like his success was often due to external factors, such as the ML's support or fortuitous circumstances rather than his innate abilities alone.
Nonetheless, I still consider it an excellent novel with a smooth, continuous narrative, and I would definitely recommend it to others. The power dynamics and character motivations could have been more balanced to enhance the authenticity of the MC's character arc.
Characters:
- Zong Jiu (Protagonist): A magician with a Dr. Strange-like backstory, whose hands were damaged, halting his magical abilities. As a transmigrator, he enters the Thriller Trainee competition with an opportunity to turn his luck around.
Spoilers ahead:
Zong Jiu is an apathetic character, displaying limited emotions throughout the story. Though he knows some details about the competition, his knowledge is limited since he didn't finish the first case.
Supporting Characters:
- No. 1 (Main Love Interest, ML): Known as the Devil, he has a devil-may-care attitude and remains mysterious early on. Initially absent, he plays a significant role in the first instance.
- Zhuge-An, Xu Sen, Xu Su, Von Zuo, and No. 10 (S-Rankers): Various side characters are scattered throughout the story, with Zhuge-An (No. 3 S-Rank) appearing omnipotent, Xu Sen and Xu Su as new, involuntary trainees loyal to Zong Jiu, Von Zuo (No. 2 S-Rank) as a vampire with a complex connection, and No. 10 (with a confusing name) known for his unlucky fate.
Romance:
While the novel isn't romance-focused, the engaging dynamic between the protagonist and the ML follows an enemies-to-lovers storyline, as their rivalry evolves into something deeper.
Setting:
Zong Jiu participates in the Thriller Trainee competition alongside numerous newcomers. After the first task, surviving participants are thrown into instances, where they must complete tasks to progress. Failure leads to punishment or elimination, while success earns survival points and rank advancement.
Plot:
The protagonist, an indifferent character, faces off against the daring ML, destined to be rivals. Their mutual enmity, despite their opposing natures, feels intentional and compelling.
Rating:
My current rating is around 3.5 to 4 out of 5. I'll reassess after reading further. My decision to stop may have been influenced by the previous favorite novel. However, I encourage those interested in the relationship dynamics and premise to give it a try.
The protagonist, Zong Jiu, is a complex character that wins readers over with his likability. Despite his antisocial behavior and cold demeanor, his sense of responsibility sets him apart. Even someone like me, who often loses interest in stories, found myself deeply engaged, thanks to the well-developed arcs and supporting characters. The emotional impact, including moments of sadness for character fates, was genuine.
The first kiss scene between ML and MC had me emotionally invested, and overall, the story is fantastic. I would rate it 4.7/4.6, only slightly downgrading due to a perceived dip in quality after the school arc, and my tendency to be critical. But in my heart, it's a 5-star read, and I'm sure many others would agree. I wholeheartedly love Zong Jiu, and "S Magician" has earned its place in my favorites list.
The characters, despite occasional flaws, carried the story through. Even though the romance felt rushed and the quality wavered after a certain point, the final arcs, particularly the one with the baby devil, were still enjoyable. I would definitely recommend "Thriller Trainee" - it was good enough to motivate me to create an account. Take my recommendation with a pinch of salt, but it's a story worth giving a chance.
The author is praised for their storytelling skills, with the reader feeling transported back to the excitement of watching action-packed shounen anime scenes, where the protagonist prevails against all odds. The user expresses their enthusiasm and fondness for this particular Infinite Flow Horror BL novel, indicating they highly recommend it.
Update: I finished reading it, and I absolutely adore it! Thank you so much!
The MC isn't a likable character either, as they lack empathy. However, their background with a caring caretaker adds a layer to their development. The narrative wraps up neatly, with additional content offering enjoyable moments.
However, there are inconsistencies that detract from the experience. For instance, the mental prowess of some supporting characters doesn't align with their supposed experience in the game, or the sudden shift in morality among certain players. Additionally, some sacrifices by minor characters feel abrupt and difficult to empathize with.
These inconsistencies might be overshadowed by the author's strong writing elsewhere, but they still stand out for me. As a personal preference, I don't appreciate when the author has ML controlling key secondary characters, reducing them to puppets. I would prefer seeing these characters develop independently, as often seen in transmigration stories.
Despite these drawbacks, the author has piqued my interest in exploring more of their works on JJWXC. There are indeed captivating summaries that caught my attention, although they haven't been started yet. I recommend giving their stories a chance, keeping in mind the potential issues mentioned.
