This is an engaging take on a transmigration tale that centers on a more grounded narrative. Instead of being caught up in political turmoil, the story revolves around a protagonist who, after migrating, focuses on mundane tasks like cooking, foraging, farming, and starting small businesses to improve their life. There's a subtle romantic subplot that develops at a leisurely pace, offering insight into the hardships faced by ordinary people during ancient civil wars, and the harrowing realities of war. Surprisingly, the main characters remain detached from the power struggles, prioritizing survival and avoiding conflict.

The story is peaceful, with the protagonist benefiting from her modern knowledge, identifying useful resources, and surrounding herself with trustworthy individuals. Her growth mainly lies in fostering relationships with others, particularly in the development of one of the supporting characters. While there's a somewhat predictable resolution involving introducing advanced techniques towards the end, the author refrains from turning it into a typical infrastructure-building novel, which I appreciate.

For those seeking a more dramatic plot, this might not be the right choice, save for the war-related tragedy. However, if you prefer family-centered narratives or stories centered on entrepreneurship, this tale would likely appeal to you. Just a heads up, there's a spoiler alert for cannibalism related to the war events.

This novel is truly exceptional. The plot is engaging, with well-developed characters that aren't one-dimensional. The villains are nuanced, not purely evil. The romance is gradual and meaningful, not overly dramatic. Let's delve into the key characters:

    1. Shen Jin - A likable protagonist who starts off a bit naive but undergoes significant emotional and moral growth throughout the story. His mother,尽管有不完美的地方,但作为母亲很尽责,经历了一些转变,最终赢得了母性的救赎。尽管她有过贪婪,但她是为了家庭。

    2. Shen Jin's father - A complex character, described as a "beast."

    3. Tian Ya (Younger Sister) - Her storyline is tragic, marking a low point in the narrative. It's a poignant reminder of the challenges faced.

    4. Shen Lie and Sang Luo - Both start as admirable characters, with minimal character progression but strong relationships. Shen Lie supports Sang Luo unwaveringly, striving to match her and protect her due to his love and respect.

    5. Lu Family - The family dynamics mirror each other, with their children influenced positively by external factors.

    6. Sang Luo's contributions - While not groundbreaking, she improves upon existing technologies like food recipes, ploughs, paper quality, and introduces crop rotation. The "invention" of odorless toilets is a notable touch.

    7. The novel is a realistic portrayal of life, avoiding excessive political intrigue, which can detract from the story.

    8. The ending leaves room for interpretation, providing a satisfying conclusion that allows readers to envision a peaceful future for the characters without overcomplicating matters. Some readers might have wished for more details, but overall, it's a delightful read. Enjoy!

The book was an excellent read and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The author effectively conveyed the struggles and despair faced by ordinary folk under oppressive and corrupt regimes. One of my favorite characters, Shen Jin, really resonated with me; I couldn't help but empathize with his situation and root for his success.

The narrative is concise and leaves room for interpretation. I am curious about the subsequent adventures of Shen Jin and his siblings, as well as the outcome of Shen Lie's imperial examination. However, I appreciate the gentle and leisurely pace of the story.

As stated, it's an excellent novel. Personally, I couldn't proceed beyond Chapter 123; much like many readers, I formed a strong connection with Shen Jin and his siblings. The story became quite intense and emotional, as you might expect. After reading some reviews, I knew their journey would be challenging. Unfortunately, I'm unsure of the fate of the sister, but it's clear that it's a tragic turn. At that point, I decided to skip to the last chapter, which others have already commented on – it leaves things open-ended. Although I found resolution for the brothers, I'm still left with a sense of longing or unease. For me, Shen Jin's character development and growth are what truly resonate, leaving a lasting impression.

In summary, I had to seek out the remainder of the story elsewhere due to its incomplete ending. The author's storytelling pace was exceptional, effectively showcasing the diverse aspects of human nature. The transitions between scenes felt seamless, demonstrating how people maintain their humanity amidst chaos or succumb to base instincts. The novel had some intense, yet non-explicit, moments that added depth.

What I particularly enjoyed was the portrayal of the tight-knit unity, loyalty, and respect among the main characters, which resembled a nearly perfect society. However, it was difficult to believe such a scenario could exist outside of a fictional context, given the complexities of the real world.

One particular scene stood out where a matriarch made a tough decision to exile her own son and grandchildren for the greater good of the group, despite her love for them. This showed her ability to prioritize the collective welfare over personal attachments.

The ending left me unsatisfied due to numerous unresolved plot points. Although the emperor's eagerness to bring Sang Lou and Shen Lei to the capital was emphasized, the story abruptly ended with their departure, without any follow-up on their arrival or interactions with other characters, like the nephews or the Chen family. It felt anticlimactic.

Nonetheless, "this wholesome tale" encompassed elements like farming, food, camaraderie, off-grid living skills, and female empowerment. The lack of political intrigue, emotional conflicts, and strong familial bonds made it a heartwarming recommendation. Despite the shortcomings, I still wholeheartedly suggest giving it a read.

"Shen Jin, oh my! He transformed into such a delightful child, although not the main focus, he stole the show with his character development and personal charm. Initially, I found his presence annoying, then tolerated, eventually grew to enjoy, and now, reading about him is the highlight of the book. I'd love to see his story continue as a standalone sequel, just hoping he remains happy and healthy. As for the plot twist involving cannibalism, it was a scary moment for me, a fear I almost couldn't overcome, but I'm glad I persevered to witness Shen Jin's growth.

The female lead (FL) and male lead (ML) are decent characters with likable personalities. The FL didn't undergo much development due to her age in her previous life, which seems intentional. The ML is a genuinely nice person, surprising considering his background in war and adversity. It would've been interesting to delve deeper into his character, exploring how he coped with his trauma, but alas, that's not part of the narrative.

This book leans more towards a slice-of-life tale with minimal romance, but the relatable everyday life aspects made it an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it."

Warning: Spoilers ahead; stop reading if you don't want to know.

This is an overall fantastic story with a relatable protagonist who has formed a loving family and support system. The main character's background as a survivor from a mountainous upbringing is mentioned frequently, which can become a bit repetitive. Shen An, Shen Ning, and Shen Lie are likable siblings, but their character development might be limited due to their consistent niceness.

The standout character, Shen Jin, starts off as an innocent child pampered by his mother. However, he demonstrates remarkable growth by acknowledging past mistakes and learning from them. Despite facing hardships, he evolves into a well-developed and admirable character with the most compelling character arc in the story. He doesn't blame his cousins for their parents' actions, even though he experiences pain, showing resilience and maturity.

The tragedy that befalls Shen Jin's sister is heart-wrenching, and it accelerates his need to grow up quickly. His father's incompetence and the mother's potential for sacrificing her own kin for her own gain make for a grim reality. Shen Jin's strong personality, shaped by adversity, is inspiring as he mentors his siblings to avoid past mistakes.

I would have enjoyed a deeper exploration of Shen Jin's upbringing as the head of his family, showcasing his growth. He is indeed a captivating character who often steals the spotlight. Among the least favorite characters, the Lu family's first branch wife stands out as the most annoying and foolish, consistently making poor choices and displaying a lack of intelligence.
