I came across Benkyo Tamaoki through a manga anthology named Secret Comics Japan, which showcases a range of unconventional manga artists like Shintaro Kago and Makoto Aida. Among the various stories presented, 'Editor Woman' stood out with its more grounded, almost wholesome narrative. Although it retains an erotic essence, there's a stronger emphasis on storytelling rather than just sexual content.

Being a fan of ero-doujins that offer intriguing plots and compelling characters, I sought to explore more of Tamaoki's works. Unfortunately, the compilation where 'Editor Woman' originally appeared, Sex 2000 (yes, that is the real title), hasn't been translated into English, nor have many of his other creations. Thankfully, 'The Sex-Philes' does have an official English translation. So, how does it measure up? Let's just say the X-Files reference isn't merely a playful pun.

The Sex-Philes follows a fairly consistent pattern. Each volume typically contains two stories; one tends to be more grounded, while the other might delve into more extreme or absurd scenarios. This could be a sticking point for some readers, particularly when certain tales include elements like futanari, scat, incest, and other potentially "extreme" fetishes that may not appeal to the average hentai enthusiast. However, it's crucial to understand that these narratives aren't framed as material meant purely for arousal.

Sex in these stories is portrayed in a relatively "straightforward" manner. There are certainly engaging and erotic moments, but they don't overshadow the unfolding narrative. I personally appreciate this aspect of Tamaoki's storytelling throughout The Sex-Philes. The volumes are quick reads, so you can expect to breeze through all 34 stories in a couple of sittings.

I found several stories enjoyable, though not all of them hit the mark. Some veer into goofy territory, with humor that doesn't always land, serving mostly as peculiar interludes between the more captivating tales. A few others might be too bizarre for my taste; the second story in volume one gives a good indication of just how strange things can get. While I might consider revisiting a few volumes, it's challenging to recommend this series to those who might be uneasy with some of the more "out-there" narratives. Nonetheless, it's worth checking out, though it certainly won't suit everyone's preferences. <p>
