From the very first chapters, you'll notice significant pacing issues that persist throughout the story. Readers are constantly hit with characters falling in and out of love abruptly, psychos attempting to kill others for no real reason, and some of the worst decision-making I've ever encountered. None of it feels logical. As I mentioned, I was initially willing to overlook these flaws for a bit of entertainment, but here's the catch—this story isn't fun. Not in the slightest.
It doesn't take long for the lighthearted moments to give way to bleakness and despair. We spend far too much time watching every character we're supposed to care about suffer physically or mentally. And to make matters worse, there's not even a satisfying or happy conclusion. I can't emphasize enough how poorly this series ended.
That said, my praise goes to Yumiko Igarashi once again. Her artwork was truly breathtaking. Her characters were beautiful, and the backgrounds often looked almost photo-realistic. I will definitely explore other works she's contributed to, such as Candy Candy, especially since I know the writer is different.
