Story - 6
Junichi Asakura is your average Japanese teen thrust into a standard harem scenario. He'll cross paths with several girls and eventually face the decision of choosing one, regardless of whether readers approve of his choice or not. The everyday antics can be somewhat entertaining; some of the girls' personalities mesh well together. Beyond that, there's nothing extraordinary here, so don't anticipate anything groundbreaking from this harem series.
Art - 8
I genuinely appreciated the artwork. All the female characters are designed to be quite KAWAII, which kept me engaged even during the slower parts.
Character - 7
Da Capo presents a varied cast of characters: the usual lineup of five or so potential love interests, along with a supportive male friend who's often hit or miss in such series (Sunohara, anyone...?). Kotori shines as the standout character, and you'll be pleased to know she gets significant attention in the latter half of the series. In terms of archetypes, it's fairly conventional—there's the non-blood-related sister, the childhood friend, and more.
Enjoyment - 7
I picked this up on a whim while looking for short, completed manga and didn't have high expectations. The result was a mildly enjoyable, albeit typical, harem series. I'd recommend it to those with an hour or two to spare and a craving for a harem story.
I randomly picked up this manga last night and went through the entire series in about an hour. Timing-wise, it fit perfectly for what I needed—something random that could be quickly consumed. However, I wasn't particularly impressed with this series. From the very beginning, I felt like I was missing something significant and essential.
To me:
- There was no real character development throughout the series.
- There was no coherent or engaging storyline.
- The chapters only connected due to recurring characters and the school setting. Otherwise, it felt like "Let's just throw this in because it fits the genre."
Labeled as a supernatural series—and being a huge fan of the supernatural—I didn't find much substance in terms of the supernatural. The only element was the sweets-related concept, but even that seemed like another instance of "Why not just add this because it sounds cool?"
I don't think this series is worth reading. I might give the anime a try since some reviews I've come across suggest that the anime is significantly better than the manga. But even then, I won't go out of my way to actively seek it out.
Thanks for reading, and let the critiques begin!
Unfortunately, I was let down—much as I usually am when the manga comes out after the anime.
Cramming 24 episodes of anime-related plot into just 2 volumes is not a great idea, to put it mildly—the manga races from start to finish so swiftly that it leaves your head spinning. Aside from the two main characters, Nemu and Junichi, the other characters are essentially pushed to the sidelines, making appearances that barely qualify as cameos, if they appear at all.
There’s no character development, the plot development is hurried and riddled with gaps large enough to fit an oil tanker through.
If you're interested in this title, I’d recommend watching the anime instead.
Well... at least the artwork is decent...
