Well, to be honest, initially, I believed I might prefer more of Bitter Virgin. This manga boasts a compelling premise centered around the grave issue of child rape. However, despite its promising foundation, the manga comes across as superficial and in need of numerous enhancements.

The pacing is excessively rapid. Characters undergo such drastic and abrupt shifts in perspective that it feels akin to a synopsis rather than a fully-fledged narrative.

Moreover, the story sidesteps the serious matters at hand. Instead of delving into all the potential fear, confusion, empathy, and societal expectations, the manga opts for an easy way out by presenting Daisuke's innate and unwavering acceptance of Hinako's past. Even the other characters who uncover Hinako's history don't make much ado about it, and all the associated social stigma is conveniently ignored.

In conclusion, the manga has room for improvement. It's unfortunate because the premise offers the potential for a far more thrilling and dynamic tale than the one depicted in the manga.

I have to admit, I've only just started reading this manga, and this is my first review.

A manga like this, with such a taboo plot, doesn't usually resonate so deeply with me. Not personally, but it hits close to home for a very dear childhood friend of mine. The story captures everything perfectly—the stepfather's advances, the mother dismissing the child's claims as lies, and eventually, when cornered, the mother having no choice but to evict him and seek forgiveness.

Some of us have experienced situations similar to those depicted in this manga, while others can relate on different levels. For me, it's the fear of men that stems from knowing a molester, like a neighbor, and witnessing my friend's courageous battle. Or perhaps you simply want to explore things from a fresh perspective.

This story focuses on a strong and brave heroine who confronts her fears every day, regardless of the challenges, and the people who come to care deeply for her. This is truly an incredible manga.

I always feel the need to justify what I read or watch when the title of a series makes people question who I am as a person.

Anyway, "Bitter Virgin" is one of the most misleading titles out there. It might make you dismiss the book outright or spark your curiosity to learn more about it. I fall into the latter category. After reading the summary, I dove straight into this series. Every time a new chapter was translated, I eagerly read it right away!

Before anyone assumes this manga is about a bitter virgin, let me clarify—it’s actually the opposite! It's about a high school girl named Hinako who has experienced rape, had an abortion, and given up a child for adoption. At the start of the manga, she comes across as an extremely awkward individual who can't stand being near men. You're introduced to a girl who seems weak, but as the story unfolds, you begin to see how strong she truly is in her interactions with other female characters. The manga's charm lies in Hinako herself! All you want is for Hinako to find happiness. If I were to connect Hinako to the title, I’d say she possesses a "virgin-like" quality (though the feminist in me isn’t thrilled with that word choice). Daisuke finds her bitter, and she finds men bitter.

Daisuke is the male protagonist. Initially, he fits the mold of a typical high school jerk. However, once he learns about Hinako's past, his character evolves significantly. Although he can be annoying, and his heavy narration can feel redundant, he still manages to contribute necessary elements to the story's progression. Moreover, while he hasn’t fully grasped seeing women as capable beings, it's clear he will continue to grow beyond the story.

The series primarily revolves around the relationship between Daisuke and Hinako. How will their bond develop amidst all their personal issues? Hinako is unaware that Daisuke knows about her past; she still struggles with androphobia, and to complicate matters further, Daisuke is gradually falling in love with her because he accidentally discovered her secret.

The manga takes many unexpected turns, but the ending is bittersweet. It's not overly happy, nor is it sad. Both characters realistically discuss what could happen in their futures. A hopeless romantic might not appreciate the closure, but it’s crucial that it concludes this way—especially since the ending feels rushed, and the sudden appearance of a random guy undermines the series' believability.

Pros:
- Storyline
- Hinako!
- Some parts are realistic (apparently, the sister’s arc was heavily inspired by the manga-ka’s life)
- It successfully incorporates romance into this sensitive topic.
- The manga is short

Cons:
- Typical storyline ("weak" girl and an annoying boy who becomes "sweet" because of her)
- Side characters: they’re poorly developed—one of the girls is excessively obsessed with Daisuke, despite him having no redeeming qualities.
- Narrative quality (this can also be seen as a positive)
- The last two volumes felt rushed.
- Certain moments felt forced, as if added just to make everything work.

This manga is beautiful, but it may not appeal to everyone. When Hinako's past is detailed, it's somewhat graphic. If this were in anime form, I doubt I could watch it. Her stepfather raped her, and you see her crying with a bit of blood... how else can I describe it?

Anyway, the primary reason for this review is to emphasize: Do NOT let the title deceive you! If anything, it’s more of a metaphor than a silly sexualized story.

First things first: I devoured this entire manga in just one day, which might be reason enough for some people to give it a try too.
Second: I've never written a review before, but I simply couldn't stay silent about this one.

As for the ratings:
Story: 9
If I had to sum up the story of *Bitter Virgin* in one sentence, I'd say, "It's something truly unique." If you're tired of the usual shoujo manga with their all-is-well school days vibes, then this is exactly what you need. Without giving too much away—because you really should experience it yourself—this dives into a "dark" side of life that isn't often explored elsewhere, whether in manga or anime.

Art: 7
Decent but not exceptional, so a "good" rating feels appropriate here.

Character: 9
The tragic protagonist Hinako, along with her equally tragic sister—who transitions from a supporting role to a main character in my opinion—are at the heart of this drama. You can easily find yourself immersed in their despair and struggles. They're supported by Daisuke, who gradually evolves for the better over time.

Spoiler alert—proceed with caution!
The sole reason I didn't award a perfect 10 here is due to what I personally see as the clichéd "Oh no, I must leave forever because I might hurt the one I love" attitude near the end.
End of spoiler.

Enjoyment: 10
Needless to say, since I finished it in one day, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Overall: 9
If someone were to ask me for a manga recommendation, *Bitter Virgin* would definitely be on my list. :D

Bitter Virgin is an excellent manga for those who need a reason to feel cheerful or simply enjoy a compelling drama. I must admit, though, it can get pretty heavy at times.

It's a great read if you're the kind of person who handles emotional intensity well. The narrative flows smoothly, the characters are a fantastic portrayal of human nature, and the artwork is superb. I can't guarantee you'll love it, but with a bit of perspective (or maybe some mood-lifting), you'll likely appreciate it as a remarkable piece of art.

NOTE: Please don't actually take any anti-depressants because of this review unless you're medically advised to do so.

Not gonna lie, this manga was... disappointing.
A story of a girl with PTSD and a boy who wants to protect/help her sounds interesting. And I would love to read it. But... I've read this before.

Just so we're clear, I don't think this is a travesty. Some things are rushed, really rushed, and some feel contrived just to add unnecessary tension, but it is still a rather enjoyable read.

The main issue for me is Hinako herself. Apart from her trauma, we don't get much about her—what she likes, what her plans are, or anything else. She's not a character; she's just there as a goal for the protagonist to strive toward. She's really poorly written. People with PTSD are still people. Hinako... not so much. She's defined solely by her trauma and little, if anything, else.

Daisuke is problematic, but in a "standard" way. It's almost a trope in mangas to have a dimwitted protagonist who could avoid 70% of their problems if they had basic communication skills, so I won't judge him too harshly... at least not here.

The rest of the cast is so boring and clichéd that it'd be a waste of time to write about them. Well, that's not entirely true. Izumi has a nice, short arc with an emotional and enjoyable climax.

The ending is also incredibly rushed and nonsensical, and I could write an entire essay on how bad it is...

Still, I must say it was a really enjoyable read. Despite the predictability of many situations, it kept me hooked. Maybe it's the art style, which excels at portraying shock and pain, but I read all four volumes mostly in one sitting.

I can't, in good conscience, recommend this manga, but I also can't discourage anyone from reading it. If you enjoy stories with trauma and don't care much about logical structure, this could be a decent read.

All of us have a secret that we don't want others to know because it might change everything in an instant.

But in this manga titled Bitter Virgin, things went exactly the opposite of what the main heroine, Hinako Aikawa, expected. Suwa Daisuke, one of her classmates, accidentally overheard her secret while she was confessing in a church. He suddenly understood why Aikawa was so afraid of men, which sparked his curiosity about whether her story was true. After following her and confirming that everything she said was indeed accurate, he became even more intrigued by her. Despite her secret, he realized that he had already fallen in love with Aikawa. Every character has their own perspective, allowing readers to grasp the rights and wrongs of each situation. The artwork is stunning, and emotions are portrayed exactly as one would hope. This manga is surprisingly mature and realistic; the story stays grounded in reality—life isn't always sweet, but we must move forward, overcome the past, and strive for the future. Hinako Aikawa can't simply erase her painful and traumatic experiences, but thanks to Suwa Daisuke, she gradually frees herself from her past and begins to embrace his feelings for her. As Daisuke says, "Feelings aren't influenced by any of that! I know everything about you, and I still love you." For me, whether someone is a virgin or not, regardless of their past, it doesn't matter—as long as you genuinely love and care for them, take a step forward and accept them without hesitation.

This manga was worth my time, seriously.

"If this were a nightmare, then this is the moment I'd wake up."

Life can be harsh. Even when it's not cruel, it still puts you through trials. Sometimes, these tests push you to your limits and beyond. This is exactly what the characters in this story face. The manga highlights issues that women and their families often encounter but are rarely acknowledged until they affect someone close to us.

This isn't just about a girl overcoming rape and pregnancy. It's a whirlwind that challenges everything you think is fair or true. You witness the lives of those you care about falling apart right before your eyes, feeling completely powerless to stop it. It's about moving forward and finding forgiveness. For some characters, it's even about reining in their psychotic tendencies (you know who you are).

Daisuke is an ordinary guy helping his mom run her restaurant. His dream is to attend a university far away, leaving his hometown behind, just like his sister did. Until then, he focuses on studying for exams and dating as many girls as possible. He's quite the player, going through relationships faster than people change socks. But there's one girl he won't touch, though he doesn't know why. Maybe because she flinches whenever any guy looks her way. That's Aikawa Hinako. After a delivery job and an encounter with a stalker, he finds himself hiding in a church. As he's leaving, Aikawa walks in and, mistaking him for a priest on the other side of a thin wall, she confesses everything: rape, abortion, and motherhood. How could one young girl have endured so much?

Through Daisuke's perspective, we truly see Aikawa. We observe how she behaves, speaks, and smiles, concealing her pain from the world. We begin to care for her at the same time Daisuke does. Gradually, she works her way into his heart, and he starts viewing the world differently, caring for someone besides himself. He develops a desire to protect her, maturing right before our eyes.

Although the manga could have been told from Aikawa's point of view, it works well from Daisuke's. She is a well-rounded character who doesn't easily succumb to her misfortunes like others might. Yet, she's also very human in dealing with what happens to her and doesn't simply ignore her trauma. While reading, I found myself angry at the way Aikawa's life unfolded, especially how she was treated by those supposed to protect her and believe in her above all else.

We occasionally glimpse into the minds of most characters, experiencing them as real people, seeing who they truly are, whether good or evil. Whether playing villains or sidekicks, every role is compelling. It leaves you guessing how certain characters will react or what they'll do next. Every chapter ends with a cliffhanger in Bitter Virgin, which can get frustrating but doesn't detract too much from the story.

Had the art been overly sweet and flawless, it wouldn't have suited the narrative. As it stands, the style emphasizes the raw emotions the manga evokes. It conveys that not everything is beautiful and imperfection has its own charm. Occasionally, expressions aren't perfect—one scene reminded me of Liar Game, which almost made me stop reading—but the story was too captivating to quit. The characters have a haunted look that connects them to their experiences, earning the manga an 8 in art.

Ultimately, what makes this manga rare and invaluable is that much of it is based on events from Kusunoki Tei's life, the author. Tei went through something similar, and I won't reveal which part, but you'll discover it as you read.

I wrapped up this manga with my eyes stinging, as it truly is a deeply sorrowful tale. It revolves around a schoolgirl who endured molestation at the hands of her stepfather and had to give her child up for adoption. Consequently, she harbors a deep fear of men due to the trauma. The male protagonist learns about her situation in secret, and the two gradually get acquainted throughout the story. Moreover, it's heart-wrenching to witness the male lead's sister go through her own tragic ordeal. Since I'm maintaining a spoiler-free review across all platforms, you'll have to read the manga yourself to uncover these details.

What genuinely deterred me from continuing with the rest of the manga was the presence of two side character girls who were an incessant distraction—like a "bad smell" that wouldn't dissipate. And then there's the male lead, who comes off as a total simp for trying to "please" one of them by being coerced into going on a date! Come on, man, stand firm in your convictions and don't let some self-centered individual dictate how you should live your life!

I couldn't stand Yuzu and Kazuki; they incessantly whine (one of them only to herself) that Daisuke ought to reciprocate their feelings instead of favoring Hinako. Seriously, what the heck? These kinds of irritating characters really ruined the manga experience for me!

That said, aside from these complaints, it's an alright read if you're in the mood for something that will make you cry. It does tackle some very serious issues, so if that's what you're looking for, it might be worth checking out.

I really appreciated the story of this manga, despite its dark tone. The relationships with the supporting characters were particularly compelling. However, I found some parts to be overly prolonged and repetitive, especially in the interactions between the two main characters. Their dialogues didn't contribute much, aside from constantly reinforcing the main plot point for the readers. That said, it was still a worthwhile read. Although the story didn't resonate with me on a personal level, the side characters evoked strong emotions and added a tragic dimension to the narrative for all those involved.

Story: The narrative was incredibly intense, delving into mature themes. This manga is unique in my experience, standing out from others due to its originality. I don't wish to reveal too much about the story, so I'll leave it at that.

Art: To be honest, the artwork didn't impress me much... it required some adjustment... but I managed to overlook it because the story was so captivating.

Characters: The character development was exceptional. You witness and empathize with the growth of each character, quickly understanding and sympathizing with them.

Overall... despite my lack of enthusiasm for the art... the characters and the story clearly take precedence. The manga was both heartrending and heartwarming simultaneously... you genuinely feel the characters' emotions... I even teared up just a LITTLE bit. When the author can evoke the readers' emotions, aligning them with the characters', it signifies that the author has effectively communicated their story and crafted an outstanding work.

Bitter Virgin is a complex work, and as the story unfolded, it became clear that the author doesn't fully grasp the significance of the protagonist's past scars. Here's my breakdown:

1 - Story [7/10] - I went in without any expectations (I don't read synopses to preserve the element of surprise). The narrative development felt somewhat disjointed, likely due to the rushed pace over 20 chapters, which left the ending feeling odd. Additionally, the handling of the protagonist's past trauma came across as simplistic and uncomfortable. However, the 7 reflects that the author did excel in certain areas.

2 - Art [6/10] - The artwork didn't leave a strong impression; it was fairly standard. The character designs lack intricate details, and the backgrounds aren't particularly elaborate. Still, there's not much to criticize here, as the art is solidly average.

3 - Characters [8/10] - The characters are well-crafted, especially the protagonist, who remained engaging throughout. They actively tackled challenges effectively. The supporting cast is also noteworthy, adding depth to the narrative.

4 - Enjoyment [8/10] - Despite its flaws, Bitter Virgin was an enjoyable read. While the conclusion might be just okay, the journey was captivating. The well-structured drama evoked genuine emotional responses at times.

Overall [8/10] - Despite the uneven ending, this work resonated with me deeply. It holds a special place in my heart, and I'll cherish the memories it created.
