Some people are just heartless! Axel knew he didn’t care for her all along—why not reject her from the start and spare her this humiliation? I’m thrilled Cana left him and found her true mate.   Can’t wait to see what sparks fly between these two lovebirds!

Old Boy had a captivating beginning. The premise alone was enough to draw readers into its narrative. The mystery introduced early on was crafted effectively, creating a gripping atmosphere. Violence was foreshadowed with sharp and crisp action sequences. The execution of the story was solid, thanks to its engaging scene compositions. The artwork was commendable, though character designs could have been improved. However, the story began to unravel midway as the villain became increasingly prominent in each chapter.

One significant issue lies in the pacing. In mysteries, it's common to have a slow but steady buildup accentuated by cliffhangers. Old Boy promises its readers a satisfying resolution, yet the story can only be stretched so far before losing engagement. It worked well for the first 20 chapters or so, but then it devolves into a repetitive cat-and-mouse game. It attempts complexity by weaving the plot into a psychological labyrinth, but the exposition falls flat. Crucial and even trivial information is disclosed excessively, akin to spoon-feeding the audience. This subtlety could have enhanced the mystery significantly.

Additionally, the villain lacks intrigue. His motives feel weak and unwarranted, despite his insistence that they are life-altering. His backstory isn't explored thoroughly, despite being pivotal to solving the mystery. His interactions with the characters resemble those in "20th Century Boys," though that manga excels in characterization and plot layering. He reveals himself too soon, diminishing the essence of the mystery. It feels lazy due to the protagonist's sluggishness in recalling events. The introduction of their past teacher serves merely as a plot device to expedite the narrative. As the story approaches its climax, the conclusion of the "Remember your past" detective game proves unsatisfying. At this point, much of what made the story initially fascinating has vanished.

In summary, Old Boy remains a somewhat recommendable manga, successfully embodying a noir atmosphere. If you seek a meticulously developed mystery with ample suspense, look elsewhere. While it's a disappointing read, there is still some value in the experience. It exemplifies how a well-executed manga can become monotonous when the plot leaves much to be desired.
