Both Toshiro and Jushiro were meant to be elsewhere. They couldn't afford to remain where they were unless they could instantly defeat Barragan. However, the matchup was impossible for both Toshiro and Jushiro who needed to get in close to do any actual damage.

Humans weren't always straightforward with deals, not that the elves were any better mind you, they were just more elegant at it, though once an elf struck the deal even if it wasn't ideally what the buyer or seller wanted the elf would stand by what he promised if he didn't he would be shunned by the rest of his clan and be punished, depending on the severity of the crime the worst was death or banishment if they were lenient, perhaps being on house arrest for twenty or thirty years for a lighter offense.
