As you might guess, this manga revolves around an orchestra. However, what you may not anticipate is that it's not a refined professional ensemble but rather a group of musicians who aren't experts but genuinely enjoy playing. As an amateur actress myself, I resonate with and admire this setting, recognizing that a multitude of fascinating events—almost anything—can transpire within a group of artists. Add Kei, the orchestra's new conductor determined to elevate the orchestra with his stringent methods while also pursuing a relationship with Yuuki (the most skilled musician), and the plot appears to have immense potential.
Nonetheless, somewhere along the way, someone—be it the mangaka or the author of the original novels—decided that a one-volume romance should encompass extensive music-related plotlines. In itself, this isn't problematic since music significantly influences these characters' lives. However, in execution, there's simply too much happening: Yuuki disapproves of Kei's conducting style and personality, yet Kei harbors feelings for him, leading to drama within the orchestra tied to both music and a love triangle involving a woman. They encounter conflicts, connect romantically, face musical challenges, struggle with their interpersonal issues, ostensibly hate each other but secretly love one another, all while striving to make the orchestra sound competent. The plot is inundated with numerous events, yet nothing stands out as distinct from any other yaoi title. In fact, there's nothing compelling enough to entice the reader to continue. Consequently, the plot amounts to little more than a chaotic jumble of occurrences.
But perhaps a stellar cast could salvage a lackluster plot, right? After all, countless great manga thrive solely on their casts! Unfortunately, Fujimi Orchestra fails in this regard as well. Instead, every character is excruciatingly one-dimensional and forgettable. If you're familiar with the conventions of yaoi, you'll grasp what I mean when I say one is the seme and the other the uke, and that constitutes the entirety of their characterization. Yuuki is helpless, overly emotional, and whiny, whereas Kei is imposing, tough, and stoic—and rapes Yuuki. Yet, we're expected not only to believe they can transition from rivals to madly in love within one volume but also to find enjoyment in their journey. These two are underdeveloped and clichéd, boasting an unhealthy relationship. Not exactly the ideal foundation for a love story!
There's also a Fujimi Orchestra OVA, which raises questions about contemporary standards. Does abuse, a convoluted plot, and characters with the depth of a kiddy pool define what makes a manga worth reading today? If so, why bother reading at all? Fujimi Orchestra isn't a great manga. It's not a good manga. It's not even a decent manga. It's just a bad manga that everyone should avoid at all costs. Perhaps the novels fare better?
