AMAZING. I LOVE IT!

This manga delves into the darker aspects of virtual reality, though not in the extreme military mind control sense, but rather the unsettling realm where individuals become dangerously addicted. From this angle, it does offer a unique perspective, as many VR-centric mangas tend to steer clear of such themes. However, this approach leads to unappealing characters and a rather weak plot. Additionally, the overall execution feels disorganized and aimless, with no character development and no significant commentary on the subject matter. The humor predominantly comes at the expense of the main character, which eventually becomes more sorrowful than amusing. The conclusion abruptly escalates the tension to an absurd degree, allowing the protagonist one final self-sabotage, leaving a bitter taste. Given the MC's poor nature, one might see their misfortune as justified, yet it still feels meaningless and unsatisfying. The artwork is also rough and subpar.

tl;dr: A manga that offers nothing more than a pitiful character experiencing misfortune.

Overall, the themes in this story have been explored numerous times before, reminiscent of "Welcome to the NHK" with its focus on otaku and erogames; "Chobits," which presents a 'which-is-better' theme; and the multitude of slightly eccentric magical-girlfriend narratives available.  

Hanazawa skillfully merges all three elements into a tightly woven tale, utilizing humor, pathos, drama, and wrapping it all in a somewhat biting critique of otaku culture and their escape from reality into the realm of moe dating sims.  

Observing Takuro and Tsukiko's awkward courtship is endearing but entirely fabricated—she is nothing more than a program, while he is an attractive and unreal representation of himself. Hanazawa keeps reminding us of this, pulling us back into reality with some effectively utilized cut-scenes. In one standout instance, we see Takuro embracing a sobbing Tsukiko as she cries about how lonely she was before he arrived. "Don't worry," he says, "you're not alone." Instantly, the scene shifts back to his bedroom, where we are faced with the overweight, unkempt Takuro hugging empty air.  

In sharp contrast to their VR personas, all characters in this narrative are generally crude, vulgar, shallow, and largely unlikable. This is emphasized in the character design, which highlights everyone's least appealing traits. I would even argue that Tsukiko, the love interest, barely qualifies as cute by standard manga and anime definitions of moe. Despite all this, Hanazawa crafts a tight, intricate, and not-quite-subtle story that leaves you feeling that, no matter how much of a failure you might think Takuro is, you genuinely want him to win her over in the end.  

Overall, it's a refreshing, humorous, albeit somewhat harsh, take on familiar themes and is certainly worth seeking out.

"Wow, that escalated quickly."  

Man, this manga is terrible. Not because the main character is practically a lolicon, or due to some cringeworthy sexual and supposedly funny scenes, and not even because the ending makes absolutely no sense—it's terrible because it's just like every other manga that builds you up, makes you think something incredibly cool is about to happen, and then... nothing. Just pure nonsense.  

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy reading the first or even the second volume. The story seems to delve deeper and become more detailed... but then suddenly, it all turns into utter nonsense.  

Get ready to feel frustrated, especially in the last three chapters.  
To be honest, I wouldn't recommend this manga.

It also conveys an oppressive awareness of the futility in attempting to enhance one's status in life or society. While I typically avoid starting with dictionary definitions due to their cheesy nature and the often arbitrary nature of titles, this instance demands an exception to highlight the title's significance to the manga. Defining its literal meaning is merely the beginning—ressentiment is also a philosophical term. According to Wikipedia, it signifies hostility directed at the perceived source of one's frustrations. Crucially, out of a sense of inferiority, one constructs a morality to oppose the "cause" of these frustrations, thereby separating the "cause" from oneself and absolving oneself of any blame. The key takeaways are that ressentiment involves feelings of inferiority, the creation of a specific morality, and the rejection of personal responsibility. With this complex definition clarified, we can explore its importance to the manga. Both the literal and philosophical meanings of "ressentiment" perfectly capture the essence of the characters and the story, so understanding the word provides essential insight into "Ressentiment," the manga. At its heart, this is a dark, misanthropic narrative critiquing otaku fandom and human greed and vanity. Yet, it is also remarkably funny, nuanced, and occasionally humanistic in its portrayal of despicable men. This tension between seemingly opposing elements makes "Ressentiment" both fascinating and tragic.

A review should ultimately answer: Should I (as the reader) engage with this? Here, the response is a resounding "yes." Despite its flaws, which this review has largely overlooked, "Ressentiment" is a compelling manga featuring an unconventional protagonist and far more depth than initially apparent. In conclusion, it's a hidden gem that may not appeal to everyone.
