But ironically, I loved it even more than Records, ahah!
It's hard to explain why I enjoyed this manga so much... The story is pretty cliché, as are the character types. However, there's definitely something special about the characters.
The art style isn't outstanding, but it's very decent. This manga isn't a masterpiece, but it somehow touched me.
Give the first chapter a try; maybe you'll get hooked like I did :D
PS: I'm forced to write a longer review, so I'm adding more text here. There's really not much else to say about this manga—it's only 21 chapters and won't be continued. But, in my opinion, that's actually better since the story wasn't strong enough to carry on. Sometimes it's better to keep things simple, ahah!
Summe up:
The story was initially called Ragnarok but underwent a change to "Sword of the Dark Ones." If you're looking for a great battle manga with a solid and concise background story, along with some body exposure, blood, love, revenge, and hate, this is it.
Story: 8
Leroy is the main character in a world dominated by "Dark Ones." These monstrous creatures devour everything in their path and are incredibly powerful. Leroy, a standout mercenary, catches the attention of an underground guild, and a mysterious girl named Lena appears, offering him a peculiar job tied to that guild—this is how the story begins to unfold. While the plot may seem straightforward at first, it becomes increasingly complex as you progress. It's a very short series, but after reading it online, I felt compelled to buy it due to its sheer awesomeness.
Art: 9
The art is highly refined for its time. Details stand out as a strong point of this manga, along with impressive textures and skillful use of black ink tones. The characters are visually appealing and exude mystery as you uncover their pasts and experiences.
Characters: 8
Honestly, I like them all, especially the young girl. Things aren't always what they appear to be at first glance. However, revealing examples here would spoil the fun! Trust me, it's incredibly impressive—even the sword that can talk and materialize adds depth.
Enjoyment / Overall: 9 or 10
I thoroughly enjoyed how a simple and fast-paced story like this could leave such satisfaction and a craving for more. Each chapter grows increasingly engaging, and the uncensored elements enhance the enjoyment significantly. I particularly savored every chapter, page, tone, and detail!
PS: I'd love to see an anime OVA adaptation of this series someday.
