I absolutely loved the plot. I devoured this manga in one sitting because of its compelling story. While I wish there had been more depth to the characters, the protagonist fits the typical "main character" mold for a reason. They are always so kind-hearted, carrying a past they desperately want to forget. That past comes back to haunt them when they meet Aiko, the girl. Unfortunately, in this manga, she's not old enough for him. Normally, they would have ended up as a couple. NOT THIS TIME.
Despite the fact that you don't get to know the characters as deeply as you might like, it's still an incredible manga. If you're into horror and gore-filled mangas, for goodness' sake, give this one a read.
I completed reading Variante within a week, which indicates that I truly enjoyed it! Although the storyline isn't particularly original, what stood out to me was the psychological depth of the characters, especially the main ones, which were portrayed masterfully, provoking deep thoughts about life and the righteousness of the methods used in pursuit of the truth.
Regarding the visuals, there were moments when I simply stared at certain panels, admiring the expressions and intricate details. The gore was somewhat excessive at times, to the point where I couldn't fully grasp what was happening, but fortunately, these panels were spaced far enough apart not to become bothersome.
As for drawbacks, the story is the weakest aspect; likely due to the limited number of chapters, interactions between characters feel hurried and unrealistic (by the end, I was thinking: "Oh! So there was a love story!").
In conclusion:
+ points: stunning art style
Exceptional character introspection.
Action, blood, and gore - YEAH!
- points: predictable story
Unrealistic interactions
So, if you're looking for a brief, impactful read filled with action yet still offering a touch of psychological thriller, this is worth checking out.
Thanks for reading!
The artwork is solid, featuring a distinctive style that has aged well. Sugimoto does an excellent job making each central character visually distinct and unique, especially when drawing Aiko's arm, the Chimera, and all the accompanying gore. The art truly shines in depicting the monstrous enemies and capturing the characters' expressions, which are fitting for both the situations and the personalities of the characters.
As for the characters, Aiko is very well-written, reacting to events precisely as one would expect from a traumatized teenage girl. The rest of the main cast occasionally suffer from inconsistency but are otherwise well-crafted. Minor characters don't appear enough to develop real personalities beyond their roles. The villains lack depth, being merely unpleasant, while allies are often sidelined to focus on Sudou, Aiko, and Kochigawa, or they appear too late to receive adequate screen time. Generally, when attention is given to character development, it's satisfying and believable.
The story, as mentioned earlier, is nothing exceptional or unique. It follows a standard formula with very few twists; if you're familiar with stories of this premise, you'll predict most developments from afar, which can diminish enjoyment. A few more original plot threads feel forced in for drama or because explanations were needed.
Overall, it's a decent manga. I recommend it if you enjoy series with similar premises and don't have a weak stomach.
