If you know of any similar novels with a relationship beginning through misunderstandings, where the main character (MC) can be male or preferably involved in a yaoi story, but with an enjoyable reading experience regardless of the genre, please feel free to send me a private message. I'm excited to explore more stories like this. Laughter is an essential part of the reading experience for me, so humor is appreciated!
Rating: 3.91/5
Read Date: August 6, 2024
Personal Enjoyment: 3.7/5
The story was decent, but I had higher expectations due to its high rating. It did justify the praise with a competent translator, a logically structured plot without excessive filler, and an intriguing blend of European setting, monsters, and religious magic. The BL aspect was commendable, but the plot felt predictable to me. I could anticipate the main character's journey almost from the beginning, despite enjoying the revelations from his previous life.
Plot: 3.9/5
While simple, the plot progression was satisfactory. Discovering the differences from the MC's initial assumptions was above average, but not groundbreaking. It ranked among the better light novels.
Writing/Translation: 4.3/5
Foxaholic's translation up to chapter 147 was solid, with only minor grammar errors that didn't detract much. There were occasional awkward sentences, and the MC's perspective occasionally showcased an overly childlike tone.
Pacing: 3.8/5
The pacing was generally good, but a lull occurred when the MC focused on an uneventful revelation from his past. I wished the significance of this event was emphasized earlier, as it felt like a forced detour.
Setting/Worldbuilding: 3.9/5
The European setting brought some novelty, but the worldbuilding could have been more immersive. It provided some variety, but lacked depth.
Characters: 3.9/5
The main characters were likable, but many supporting characters were underdeveloped. The antagonist redemption arcs were a pleasant surprise, but the main villain's motivations felt weak.
Romance: 3.9/5
The romance was decent, with a sweet buildup and growth between the couple. However, once they were together, my interest waned. The recent conflict seemed unnecessary, which contributed to my decision to stop reading.

Overall, while the story had its strengths, the predictability and lack of surprises led me to rate it slightly lower. A stronger emphasis on plot twists and character development could have made it more compelling.
I appreciated the emotional focus on Carlton; his vulnerability and sensitivity stem from his upbringing. Luisen and Carlton's connection was incredibly sweet, and it was heartwarming to see their bond evolve throughout the story.
There was a touching moment with Ruger – although his fate might seem harsh, I couldn't help but feel that it was his path to redemption. The scenes where Luisen's past as an orphan was revisited, and how much his retainers cherished him, brought tears to my eyes. He was essentially a spoiled child who strayed, but their unwavering pride was moving.
The translator did an exceptional job, maintaining a balance between entertainment and information. Overall, it was a fantastic reading experience.
The translation is exceptional, and I want to express my gratitude to the translator for their diligent work. The narrative is clear and engaging, drawing me into a complex mystery where the main character, Duke, unravels the truth alongside the readers. The inclusion of flashbacks adds depth, leaving us wondering about the Duke's understanding of past events in both timelines.
Here's a brief summary:
The story begins with the Duke's previous life, a selfish and irresponsible figure who neglects his duties to his people and lands. His dukedom suffers, leading to its downfall, and he becomes a wandering vagrant before his eventual demise. Just before his death, he encounters a mysterious pilgrim who cares for him until the end.
In his rebirth, the Duke finds himself at an earlier stage of his life, determined to make amends for his past missteps. However, the mercenary commander responsible for his former troubles is now present, and the Duke embarks on a journey of choice and understanding, eventually forming an unlikely bond with the mercenary as they become allies.
And there's even a Manhwa adaptation...
For readers who sought a romantic focus, the story was engaging, well-paced, and featured some heartwarming moments without overwhelming explicit content. So far, it's been a satisfying read. Additionally, fans can enjoy a manga adaptation with visually appealing artwork, which adds another layer of enjoyment.
There are a few areas for improvement. As someone who appreciates intricate kingdom politics and attention to detail, I do have a few grievances. One issue is the inconsistency in the character Luisen's behavior. He admits himself that he isn't particularly smart, so it's hard to fault him much. However, his inconsistency might bother readers who value character consistency. He occasionally slips up, which could be seen as unexplained at times. Luckily, his friend Carlton is supportive and doesn't notice these moments.
Additionally, there are discrepancies in Luisen's past persona and actions, which can be confusing. His past behavior seems to suggest he wouldn't have initiated anything with women, even though he's in a romantic plot. The author seems to have struggled with his character's initial shyness, leading to some inconsistencies. It's not a major issue, and it's not uncommon in transmigration stories, but it could be smoother.
In summary, these issues aren't deal-breakers. If you've read other BL webnovels, you're likely familiar with this sort of thing. Overall, it's a decent read, and while Luisen's obliviousness might be frustrating at times, considering his background and learning difficulties, it's somewhat understandable.
The character development of the main character is exceptional, and their relationship with the love interest is endearing and well-developed. The story doesn't drag or become unnecessarily complicated just for the sake of a drawn-out "will they or won't they" drama, which I find commendable. Overall, it's been a delightful read so far, and I highly recommend it.
