As long as someone understand for what he mean, then it's not much of a problem if his english is bad. If you don't understand what he meant, then that's mean you are Stupid

I have to say, sadly, after loving the OVA so much, I was disappointed with the manga. The story felt very rushed at times. Don't get me wrong, everything I loved from the anime was there; I just honestly feel like the manga could have had a lot more.

Though I will admit, I loved the side story.

Trigger Warnings: one count of rape

A Foreign Love Affair is a one-volume manga that tells the story of a yakuza clan heir and a cruise ship captain. Their paths cross after a one-night stand on the yakuza's wedding night, and they reunite in Italy to embark on a whirlwind romance.

Surprisingly, this turned out to be an unexpectedly sweet read.

Initially, I was uncertain about it. The artwork felt rough, the storyline moved quickly, and there didn’t seem to be a clear plot. I wasn’t sure where the story was headed or what the author intended, and I found myself losing interest fast, setting it aside overnight.

The next morning, I decided to give it another chance. If I didn’t enjoy it, so be it—it was just another one-volume contribution to my reading challenge.

However, I’m glad I returned to it. Almost immediately after the first two chapters, the manga transitions into its charming side, showcasing the sweet affair and the characters beginning to form a relationship. Of course, due to the limited space in a single volume, their connection feels rushed, and we don’t get much time to see it evolve. I think this story might have benefited from being expanded into two volumes, which could have improved the pacing and allowed for deeper character development. Despite the haste, the storyline remains enjoyable and heartwarming.

The artwork also improves significantly after the first two chapters, becoming clearer and more polished. Initially, it felt like a rough draft, making it hard to fully immerse myself in the narrative. This might have been due to the scan I read, but others have mentioned similar issues, so there may be problems with the original printing itself.

--- Very mild spoiler, trigger warning ---

One of my main concerns was the inclusion of a rape scene. While it did serve to advance the plot somewhat, I believe Ayano Yamane could have chosen a different approach for this moment. What I appreciated, however, was that the act did not occur between the two main characters. In the yaoi genre, it’s common to see rape used as a misguided attempt at "messy romance" between protagonists, but the author avoided this trope here. Still, it would have been preferable to enjoy such a tender story without relying on rape as a tool for character or relationship development.

    --- End ---

A Foreign Love Affair possesses many positive qualities, but considering the points raised above, I can only rate it six stars. It isn’t the best manga or yaoi I’ve ever read, nor do I think it will become one in my opinion. The ending is satisfying, tying things up neatly without leaving too many loose ends. Although the characters’ relationship develops rather quickly, it doesn’t feel as rushed as in some other one-volume mangas. Both main characters are well-developed and almost feel like real people you could encounter in everyday life.

I wish there had been a second volume—or even a short one-shot—providing insight into their lives post-story. It would be delightful to revisit these characters, but it seems the author has set this work aside indefinitely.

All in all, I’m pleased I chose to read this despite my initial reservations about the first two chapters. It surprised me, which is rare in the yaoi genre given its predictable tropes and recurring issues. Even with the flaws mentioned throughout this review, I’d still recommend it to fellow yaoi enthusiasts who appreciate stories like this. It was entertaining, and I found myself chuckling at the lighthearted humor sprinkled throughout.

I've read the manga, and it does rush things quite a bit. Seriously, they could have waited a little before sacrificing a crew member. I get that the character is drunk, but still! It was like the tenth page when all this started happening. But I do have to say it was good. If you enjoy a bit of yaoi sometimes, like me, then this is worth checking out. However, to me, this manga feels like a one-night stand kind of thing.

And why is the gay guy always blonde and paired with some strong dude, like the gangster type? But if you like yaoi, then this is a decent read.

    Story: 5/10
First off, I'm sure many people are big fans of Ayano-sensei's work. However, after reading this and a few others, I don't think I'll be joining the fan base anytime soon. The story had a lot of potential and incorporated several good ideas. I appreciated some of the concepts she tried to integrate, but ultimately, it fell apart in terms of storytelling. It felt rushed and lacked context, with lots of dialogue that failed to convey anything truly engaging. Reading through all the text was burdensome, as much of it seemed irrelevant. It simply failed to deliver any satisfaction, which is why it received a low score.

    Art: 9/10
The one redeeming factor of the entire manga was its captivating art style. The characters—especially the men—were beautifully drawn, and even the women were stunning. The backgrounds were detailed and breathtaking, making up for the lack of substance in the story. Despite everything else, the artwork was absolutely remarkable!

    Character: 5/10
The characters were bland and one-dimensional, fitting into the typical Yaoi tropes of uke and seme, along with a predictable supporting cast. Their development was abrupt rather than gradual, switching from one personality trait to another within just a couple of pages. This inconsistency made them difficult to connect with and left me unimpressed.

    Enjoyment: 5/10
The only aspect I enjoyed was the art. Everything else felt like a waste of time. While I regret spending time on this manga, I'm glad I gave it a chance, even if it turned out to be more of a gamble than anything else.

    Overall: 6/10
I wouldn't recommend this to someone looking for a well-plotted Yaoi manga with vibrant characters. It simply wasn't my cup of tea, but just because it didn't appeal to me doesn't mean it won't resonate with others. If you're curious, why not give it a try? You might find it worthwhile—you never know until you read it.
