Bride Of The Shadows

loved this book!!!!

For those who don't know, the manga is supposed to be a sequel to the PS1 game of the same name, but its events became "non-canon" due to the storyline of the Shadow Hearts trilogy for the PS2.  

The manga itself is a pleasant addition to the franchise overall, featuring a well-crafted story that fits seamlessly into the Koudelka/Shadow Hearts universe and feels like something that could have happened after the game's conclusion.  

However, the manga does fall short in some areas, particularly in its art style. That might sound a bit harsh—it doesn't necessarily "fail," but it doesn't align with the aesthetic of the franchise. The art has a very "cute" and "cartoony" feel, reminiscent of your typical everyday shounen series. In contrast, the original game featured a more "realistic" art style, with environments that were considerably grim and unsettling—piles of bodies, blood splatters, and shocking moments like a suicide scene involving a shotgun. The manga doesn't come close to capturing this kind of imagery and, instead, comes across as rather "wholesome."

Koudelka is a narrative with significant potential that, unfortunately, doesn't quite reach its peak, largely due to its pacing and the manga's overall length. I appreciate the concepts it presents; however, I believe the manga could have benefited from being 3 to 4 times longer to properly develop these ideas.  
  
The story begins as a straightforward "mysterious girl with amnesia" tale but swiftly transitions into more sci-fi and fantasy tropes. While some elements may feel clichéd, I still enjoyed those moments. My main issue lies in how hurried the progression feels.  
  
I'm not an authority on this manga, but it seems as though it was cut short from the outset, which might explain the rushed storytelling. The author attempts to cover a lot of ground, yet with only 15 chapters, each arc lasts about 3-4 chapters, leaving many events feeling abrupt and requiring acceptance without much explanation.  
  
Despite this, the story contains numerous intriguing ideas and elements. Surprisingly, it concludes in a satisfying manner, considering the extensive events covered. At times, I feared the plot would become overly complex, but the author ties most loose ends together effectively, which I found impressive.  
  
Is it worth reading? Absolutely, yes, particularly if you're fond of the late '90s/early 2000s art style (think Trigun). With just 15 chapters, and although they are slightly longer than average (around 33 pages per chapter), this manga can be read in about an hour.  
  
If you're looking for a more expansive and intricate story with a similar tone, consider Pandora Hearts. If you adore the art style, Trigun might also interest you.  
  
Overall, I rate this a 6/10. It's a solid read worth checking out, but not one you need to go out of your way for.

When I first began reading Koudelka, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. My initial thoughts were "oh, okay, strange girl who escapes from a sanatorium... SANATORIUM, yeah *-*" [yeah, I'm crazy about those settings XD]

Story - (8/10)  
Koudelka revolves around a girl who escapes from a sanatorium and possesses mysterious powers. She knows nothing about her past or her abilities. However, she meets Joshua, a young boy living alone in an abandoned church in a small town after his mother's passing. Following their encounter, both start uncovering truths about their pasts.  

The early chapters are set in the small town where Joshua resides, but after some complications, he and Koudelka end up in Paris, where Joshua used to live with his mother. The story isn't groundbreaking, particularly after they reach Paris, when you might think, "oh, I've seen this before; it's going to unfold like this and that..." Nonetheless, it's compelling. It can't be compared to other works in the same genre, such as FMA or Shaman King. I'd say it's a blend of various series [and Moulin Rouge too], and I appreciated how it all came together.  

The only drawback is that the manga spans only 3 volumes. For such an intense plot, you'll feel that 1 or 2 additional volumes are missing.

Art - (9/10)  
There's nothing to criticize here. As an artist, I enjoyed the artwork, although it can occasionally feel cluttered, leading to confusion. However, I adored the eyes and the clothing! If you liked the dresses from Moulin Rouge, you're sure to enjoy this manga. While the female characters are undeniably cute and beautiful, the male characters, though not unattractive, are distinctively realistic.  

Characters - (8/10)  
All characters have their own struggles and motivations for their actions throughout the series. This is excellent because no one enjoys seeing a character appear out of nowhere. Still, I believe the story was rushed towards the end, leaving you feeling [again] that it shouldn't have been limited to 3 volumes. Nevertheless, all characters are charismatic, especially the courtesans Koudelka and Joshua meet in Paris.  

Enjoyment - (10/10)  
I awarded a 10 for enjoyment because I genuinely, deeply loved the story. I could empathize with the characters' emotions and cheer them on—something I didn't anticipate when I first read the synopsis.  

Overall - (9/10)  
It's a lovely story; if you enjoy the genre, you should definitely give it a try. Being a short manga, you won't regret spending your time even if it doesn't resonate with you. Koudelka is a beautiful tale about embracing who you are and shaping your future through your choices. It's also about letting go of the past to build your future.  

I didn't give it a perfect 10 simply because I felt it was too brief. But I believe my desire for more indicates that it captured my attention.

I had fun reading this novel. I liked that it has a reasonable number of chapters. The characters, though already typical in C- novels, are totally the kind of leads that I love reading about. The ML is a domineering and powerful man who instantly changes when it comes to the FL. The FL is the kind of female lead that I really love. She was a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tough. I also find her "vanity" very endearing and empowering as a female reader. I don't wanna elaborate on it too much. I also find the side characters very endearing and interesting. I hoped there were side stories about the emperor and empress, the princess and her guard, the best friend and the first cousin and of course the twin brother and the other young Miss Gao. I even adored Li Song's character. The way the author wrote and developed his character made him touch my heart. I'm sort of happy that in a way he got his chance and found his own happy ending with Wei Luo in that side story.
