This is it. The author had to have put crack cocaine in this book with how good it is. The intrigue, use of suspense, worldbuilding, schemes e.t.c everything about this book is done well; I even dare say this book is better than tyranny of steel, that’s how good it is. I highly recommend it any prospective readers.
So I read this when it was being translated by a different group/translator, and it was quite some distance through the book already. And what I can say is that this book contains plenty of wuxia elements, and some of them can be annoying. Like the arrogant know it all MC, the not taking a harem but having it anyways type MC, especially the knowing everything and nothing at the same time MC. HOWEVER, this story actually does progress steadily over time throughout the chapters, and while some main points are rather ridiculous, they still manage to hook you in and keep you seated in the seat for the long run. Give the novel a chance, it’s actually well written and we can just hope to receive great quality work.
The story is pretty good. One of the better ones among Chinese Novels. But it has its own collection of problems. Translation : It is readable, but many sentences have lost their meaning among translation. Some words are misinterpreted, while others are in wrong place. I am not sure, whether it's translation error or writing error. For example, the story loves to use the term devilish to describe anything above average. Devilish talent, devilish beast, devilish tongue. Honestly, the terms should have been monstrous and not devilish. Similarly, I remember reading a chapter ( when he goes to Murong Xus family, before the five talents come.) The world servile has been used. MC looked at him in servility or something. Once again, wrong verb. MC didn't give a **** about him. Their are several such instances where wrong terminology has been used. From around chapter 400-500, divine weapons and divine dao has been replaced with Supreme Dao and weapons, which is causing confusion. Then their is the cultivation level, many times the levels have been changed or mixed. Where Profound should be used, they have used Perfect and so on. Plus cultivation level is not described clearly, especially the Mysterious Exquisite level. Anyway, talking about characters. I am taking western novels such as those by Sanderson, Martin, archer and Rothfuss. Although an unfavorable yardstick, it's a wasted effort if I compare CN with CN novels. It's okay. His aspirations are rather vague and sudden. They lack motivation and are extremely forced. His love life is sudden. How can three meetings turn into a life long love commitment, is something I can't fathom. The world building... Difficult to comment. Until ch 650 we have just gone over the Human and Xuan Yuan Mound. Several forbidden areas are still left. Despite that, from what I can see, the world building is rather lack luster. The politics is vague and completely depended in that regions owner and his backing. The economy is not even mentioned. The power division is also rather confusing. I don't expect something of Martin's level, but at least something?
The definition of mediocre and cliched, the story is boring and simple with nothing unique or special about it. The main character is supposedly smart but never shows it. The enemies are all brainless young masters. the world building is nonexistent.
So I have been reading this book for 7 months already and I have grown to like it. At first I saw it as a chore but for some reason I kept going and then overtime I’ve grown to like it. To get to this point you’ll have to have patience and time. It is a chore to read and is confusing but the further you go it gets less confusing and easier to read. I’m quite surprised that the book manages to have a stable world and story with almost no loose threads so far despite being confusing at the start. So basically the further you go the less confusing it is and the more fun it is. Right now I’m really enjoying the character interactions and the story(I even cried at some parts). So I’d definetly suggest you try it out if you have the patience and the time.
