To elaborate, the narrative follows Chae Jae Hyuk, a regular teenage boy leading a simple life until it abruptly ends when he becomes entangled in a battle involving Serin, a Denizen of Chaos and demon necromancer. Consequently, he must forsake all earthly ties and follow his new master into the world of Chaos, driven by a specific objective. From this point, the story unfolds at a swift pace, introducing a multitude of characters and supernatural elements that readers must familiarize themselves with. It isn't long before the plot shifts towards a conventional adventurous quest. However, in this instance, it serves as an effective narrative device for shounen enthusiasts, captivating manga readers. As the quest progresses, the story deepens, becoming increasingly engaging.
Immortal Regis features a cast of intriguing, well-rounded shounen characters, most of whom possess extraordinary supernatural abilities. The protagonist, Chae Jae Hyuk, is a likable individual thrust into a dire predicament. While he has some irritating traits, these can be overlooked as he matures through various trials, showcasing determination. Additionally, Serin, the enigmatic girl who initiates the events, is a skilled fighter with an allure heightened by her occasional out-of-character actions. A diverse array of supporting characters ensures there's no room for boredom, with some playing pivotal roles in the storyline (e.g., Depore), while others serve more utilitarian purposes.
In terms of artwork, Immortal Regis excels significantly. This manhwa embraces a gothic aesthetic that aligns perfectly with its theme, though the visuals can occasionally become sketchy and challenging to follow during combat scenes. Character designs are generally straightforward, often incorporating round chibi-like features, yet several stand out due to their creativity, particularly those of the main characters.
Overall, Immortal Regis is a highly enjoyable manhwa that warrants attention from any shounen reader. Although many might quickly recall similar shounen manga (Bleach, Soul Eater, etc.), this doesn't detract from the manhwa's ability to craft its own compelling story. Before diving into this manhwa, be aware that numerous unexplained mysteries exist within the narrative, potentially requiring time for full elucidation.
I will use some slight spoilers in this review, but nothing that should ruin your enjoyment of the manga. Also, I have to confess I have not read the sequel. I don't intend to do so in the near future.
To give credit where it's due, I think the author had a solid story planned out from the start, which was suppressed and lost due to the format. Had this been a light novel, I think the author would have had a much better chance to develop the characters properly and lay out the dynamics of the world. The pacing of the manga in the beginning is very slow — and slower still when laying out the exposition — and it becomes extremely fast towards the end.
The plot of this manga is very confusing; to the point where I would say that 'confusing' is an understatement. It starts out a bit like High School DxD, progresses quickly into a pace like Mx0 with less comedy, then we get a scenario a bit like Owari no Seraph and lapse off into an ending that invites the reader to continue reading in the next series. The lack of a conclusive ending did not contribute to my enjoyment of the series. Characters are introduced rather haphazardly, and the world-building is mediocre at best. Even by the end, I didn't understand anything about Orvis or how it is governed. I'm also not sure if it's just an academy or an entire city. The powers of the characters are also not scaled well. Readers are not explained the source of the characters' magical powers or the reason for the variation in powers. This need not be a problem, but at many points in the story, characters have sudden power-ups that make little sense, and the inability of the reader to gauge the sense of threat to the MCs makes each encounter less interesting. As a reader, I never found myself invested in the story, like I do for One Piece.
The art is actually fairly good, and the fanservice is also not overtly scattered at odd points in the panels. There were a few scenes where I thought the fanservice was badly placed, but it isn't too problematic.
The characters are where this manga scored really low. Characters are not consistent. The female MC was badass in the beginning and — remarkably suddenly — transforms into a lovestruck girl with low self-esteem. How she fell in love with our MC, I will never know. The male MC started out as a serious character, then seemed to become some average MC of a harem anime, and then reverted to being serious. The MC's friends are introduced and then forgotten rather quickly. The motivations of characters are never fully explained. We don't know anything about the teachers of this academy, or the motivation of the four leaders of this society, or even the real motivations of our MCs. Serin's motivations are especially confusing.
The overall muddle of the plot, the inconsistencies of the characters, and the poorly-developed world make for a less-than-enjoyable experience.
TL;DR: I would recommend people skip this manga. If I eventually bring myself to read the sequel and form a better opinion of this, I'll revise my review here. It's just a messy series at all points.
THE STORY: Outstanding! The concept of having a zombie as the main character in a manga or manhwa has never been attempted by any other author, as far as I know. That's exactly what draws me to it—it’s unique and original. The plot is packed with adventure and mystery, making it incredibly captivating. There are numerous elements shrouded in mystery, which only adds to the allure of the story.
THE ART: Fantastic! One thing I've noticed is that many Korean artists have a distinct style of drawing characters compared to traditional manga artists. Personally, I've read several manhwas that feature better art than some mangas. Of course, this is just my opinion. Getting back to the topic, the art in this manhwa is truly exceptional! I absolutely loved it!
THE CHARACTERS: The relationships between characters are still developing. As mentioned earlier, the entire story is steeped in mystery. Nonetheless, one thing is certain: there's definitely something brewing between the two main characters ^_^. Additionally, the narrative primarily revolves around Jae Hyuk's mysterious ability to awaken the De Pore power. It seems he isn't your average boy—of course, this trope is common in fantasy/supernatural manga since he is the protagonist after all (XD). His uniqueness attracts a multitude of enemies, yet he also meets individuals who wish to protect him, such as Serin and Infinity. However, Jae Hyuk's destiny holds immense significance for Chaos' future! (Sorry for the spoiler, but I'm sure you would have figured that out too, XD)
ENJOYMENT? You will undoubtedly enjoy this manhwa! Believe me!
All in all, you MUST give it a read! It's phenomenal!

My editor dared to insult my book, (calling it trash and putting my previous month's payment on hold)
to those who already started the book, I am very sorry about this.
