I firmly believe that this manga is one of the best I have read so far or am currently reading. Although I've only gone through chapters 0 to 3, I genuinely think this manga has the potential to be a tremendous success. The characters are already playing significant roles, and the story is just beginning. It's merely the entrance to an epic tale, and I'm already excited about purchasing all the volumes of this manga. I truly believe the creator of this manga will achieve great success. I absolutely love this manga.

Recently, I've found myself diving headfirst into the world of manga, thanks to my insatiable reading appetite. Currently, my focus is on Japanese graphic novels, more commonly known as "manga."

Let's get straight to the point: the review of the manga "Kimi ni Todoke," which translates to "Reaching You." At first glance, "Kimi ni Todoke" might seem like just another shoujo manga, but that's where the resemblance ends. This series primarily revolves around themes of love and friendship. It beautifully captures some of the most remarkable moments that occur when the seed of first love blossoms in a teenager's heart. It certainly stirred up nostalgia for my own teenage years and school life. The slice-of-life interactions between the main protagonist, Sawako, and her friends—both male and female—are incredibly endearing and innocent.

**SPOILER ALERT**

For those who haven't read the manga (or watched the anime), this summary may contain spoilers.

The story unfolds with our protagonist, Sawako Kuronuma, nicknamed "Sadako" by her classmates due to her resemblance to the character from The Ring horror stories. She has been feared and misunderstood because of her appearance. There are also rumors circulating in school that Sawako can see ghosts and curse people. However, beneath her exterior lies a sweet, naive, and timid girl who yearns to make friends and fit in as a regular high school student.

A turning point in Sawako's life occurs when Kazehaya, the school's popular boy, begins conversing with her. With Kazehaya's support, Sawako attempts to make friends and engage with various people. As these changes unfold around her, Sawako feels deeply grateful to Kazehaya for providing her with such opportunities. Gradually, a sweet and innocent love story develops between them. This manga chronicles their journey of love while overcoming any obstacles that arise along the way—with a little help from their friends, of course.

If you enjoy the romantic genre or occasionally indulge in a bit of romance, give this manga a try. It's a graphic novel/comic, but let's face it—there's no age limit when it comes to a "good read." Alternatively, you can watch the anime!

5 Story: Sawako is a girl who seems scary but is actually shy, awkward, and caring. She meets a popular guy whom she falls in love with because he's loved by everyone and isn't afraid of her. Unlike her classmates, he even calls her by her real name. Sounds original, right? Well, the twist comes after they fall in love and become a couple. That's when things start to unravel. There's no real story, just filler, with a bit of character development for the supporting cast spread over about three books. It descends into mushy territory, and so do the characters. The plot disappears, and even if it returned later, I didn't want to stick around to see it. All the drama just fizzled out.

4 Art: The art was quite plain, but it did succeed in making Sawako look both scary and cute, which worked well for the story. The style fit, and the artwork on the back cover was particularly nice to me.

7 Characters: The characters were well-developed at first, but their growth wasn't handled properly. Over time, their unique quirks disappeared, and the characters became more rigid. While peeling back their layers was fun at times, they lost depth in the process.

5 Enjoyment: For me, it was pretty boring. The first book was charming, but as it went on, the humor fell flat. All the conflicts were resolved too easily, and once the relationship started, it lost its appeal. However, I did enjoy how the anime tackled random topics in a charming way, like the little men or one character's love for ramen.

I read this manga right after finishing "Ao Haru Ride," so I have something fresh to compare it with, and I must say, this one was significantly better. Even though it can be frustrating and slow at times—much like high school love—it's incredibly refreshing and heartwarming.

One of the standout aspects of the series is the absence of fan service and its focus on friendships alongside romance. It isn't your typical "shy unpopular girl and experienced popular boy fall for each other" story, mainly because the main character is more than just shy. Her inability to interact with others, her constant overthinking, and her tendency to distance herself made me believe that Sawako likely suffers from serious social anxiety. This makes her journey of forming lasting bonds and breaking out of her shell both exciting and sweet for the audience. She embarks on an intense mental journey where she learns to believe in herself and trust her peers, showing that her life is altered by more than just a crush.

I personally liked all the characters and how they evolved. As mentioned earlier, Sawako is quiet and innocent but also strong from the start. Despite everyone being scared of her, she doesn't stop trying to befriend them, and Kazehaya notices this. Initially, Kazehaya seems like the perfect hottie who is inherently nice and approachable, yet he's also selfish and clueless about relationships. We witness Ayane transform from someone who sees no value in herself and engages in abusive relationships just to pass time into someone who studies and works hard and gets nervous around someone she likes. Ryu remains quiet and balanced throughout the series, but we see his bottled-up romantic feelings finally overflow through his bold actions with the one he likes. Chizuru is the only character that doesn't entirely make sense to me, as she goes her whole life seeing a character as family and then suddenly views him romantically. Nonetheless, she's still a supportive and air-headed character who provides comic relief and becomes more in touch with her feelings as the story progresses. Pin is hilarious, and it's great to see his relationships with his students develop and his true teaching abilities surface.

I really enjoy the art style, although I didn't when I watched the anime years ago, so it depends on personal preferences.

The main issue I had was how distressing their misunderstandings and behaviors were. I found myself yelling at the pages when characters would assume things and set their developing relationships back by ten steps. They struggle to express their feelings clearly, which is realistic for teenagers, so it does make sense. Personally, I didn't mind how slowly their relationships progressed. It made each romantic moment between them more special since I had been waiting for them for quite some time.

In conclusion, the story is light-hearted and fun. The audience watches teenagers stumble through their first relationships and then face the daunting challenges of college and their futures. They mature and change for the better while also evaluating their own worth and efforts. I highly recommend it!

Kimi ni Todoke is one of those manga that brings a smile to my face every time I dive into its pages.

Not many things have that effect on me. That's why I truly believe it's a masterpiece.

The plot isn't drastically different from other high school romance stories. In fact, I don't even fully understand why I adore it so much. I wouldn't necessarily describe the romance between Sawako and Kazehaya as profoundly deep. They like each other, and that's pretty much the essence of it. The dynamics between Sawako and her classmates or friends are also fairly standard.

Yet, for some inexplicable reason, I can't help but feel this warmth and joy every time I read the manga or watch the anime.

Perhaps Kimi ni Todoke will always remain one of those mysteries that doesn't require justification. A simple smile on Sawako's face is more than enough to brighten my day.

"Kimi ni Todoke" stands as a pinnacle of wholesomeness in the realm of manga. It is a heartwarming narrative that fills you with warmth and evokes nostalgia for the simplicity and innocence of youth.

What makes this manga particularly enchanting is its depiction of characters' shyness, their cautious first steps into the world of relationships, and the growth they experience over time. Observing them navigate the complexities of adolescence, with all its challenges and victories, is a truly joyful experience.

The friendships portrayed in "Kimi ni Todoke" are one of its standout features. The camaraderie, support, and genuine care the characters show for one another are both refreshing and beautifully illustrated. It's not merely a love story; it's a tale of friendship, self-discovery, and personal development.

Additionally, the manga adeptly addresses various issues faced by teenagers without ever coming across as didactic or contrived. The problems encountered by the characters are relatable and handled with sensitivity and thoughtfulness.

In summary, "Kimi ni Todoke" encapsulates the essence of youth, love, and friendship in the most endearing manner. The characters, with their charming shyness, struggles, and growth, will touch your heart with a blend of nostalgia and affection. It's a story that will leave you longing for more and appreciating the beauty of friendship and love.

Because this manga is still ongoing, all my ratings are based up to the 15th volume, so they might go up or down as the story progresses.

I'm actually not one to write reviews for mangas I haven't finished reading or animes I haven't seen through to the end, but I just had to write a review for this one, simply because...

Alright, first off, I want to be honest. I started reading this manga because of Sawamura Eijun, you know, that charmingly loud and obnoxious pitcher from Diamond no Ace, since he seems to have a thing for this manga. So... I gave it a try.

And honestly, I totally get why Eijun loves this manga so much.

In terms of story or plot, it's actually quite straightforward and normal. Nothing too groundbreaking compared to other romance mangas. BUT, there are several reasons why I adore this and would highly recommend it to you:

The story doesn't solely revolve around the romance! What I love about this manga is how the mangaka gives ample space to develop and nurture the friendships between the characters (both on the girls' and boys' sides). It's truly beautiful.

Secondly, what draws me to this story is how the mangaka has chosen honesty as the defining trait for each character. This keeps the narrative free from ridiculous misunderstandings or clichéd conflicts. The situations presented feel genuine, which is why I appreciate it so much—I don't need more tsundere types in my life.

I can't fault the art. The artwork isn't something that needs much critique.

In terms of enjoyment and overall experience, this manga is fantastic, and you'll likely love it. If not for the story itself, then at least for the honesty of the characters, their friendships, and their romances.

Recently rated as the top manga for the week of 28th November 2007, I believe this manga truly deserves its ranking. Although there are instances of classic shoujo clichés, such as angry rivals, I genuinely adore the main protagonist's character. Instead of developing a warped personality from being ostracized, Sawako retains her innocence and consistently seeks to alleviate the burdens of others.

I find the artwork both charming and attractive, not overly adorned with typical shoujo elements like flower backgrounds, but rather reminiscent of the style seen in Honey & Clover. This manga isn't just a love story about an unpopular girl falling for the most popular guy; instead, Kimi ni Todoke is fundamentally about a girl's journey toward gaining understanding and acceptance from her classmates.

No spoilers at all, just how I feel after just finishing the entire manga.

Kimi ni Todoke did an incredible job of making me experience the characters' drama, happiness, joy, and all the emotions tied to teenage romance. Even though I'm no longer a teenager, it transported me back in time with a flood of memories and made me yearn for a love story like theirs to happen to me.

The story follows the journey of the female protagonist, Kuronuma Sawako, throughout her high school years as she works on improving her social skills with her classmates, exploring and understanding her feelings for her friends, and, of course, for the person she falls in love with. While the pacing can be slow at times, it remains thoroughly enjoyable. The author excels at delving deeply into not only the main character but also her closest friends. As a reader, I developed strong bonds with Sawako and her friends, and I truly felt like I was part of their circle. I experienced all their emotions, struggles, and moments of happiness. It was heartfelt, bittersweet, fun, frustrating, and so much more.

I wish the author had included more chapters about the characters' futures at the end, but as it stands, it was still a satisfying conclusion. I'm not sure if I'll read it again in this lifetime, but many of the characters' moments will undoubtedly remain etched in my memory until the end. This was undoubtedly an amazing journey.

Kimi ni Todoke is undoubtedly one of the top picks in the shoujo, romcom genre. It's humorous, endearing, and every character feels like someone you genuinely want to support. No one comes across as a mere plot device, and the story unfolds with such authenticity. The challenges the characters encounter are entirely realistic and relatable, which effectively underscores that relationships aren't always filled with endless joy, as other romance animes or mangas might depict. It strikes a perfect balance—neither overly sentimental nor tediously slow-paced like some other series can be.

Overall, this manga ranks among my all-time favorites, and I enthusiastically recommend it to everyone. While I wished for a bit more focus on Kazehaya and Sawako towards the conclusion, the ending we received was satisfying enough for me.

"Reaching You," no other words could better encapsulate the essence of this manga.

Kimi ni Todoke, at first glance, appears to be a typical Shoujo romance manga with predictable plotlines and characters. Even some fans might think it fits this stereotype. However, few realize how many Shoujo clichés Kimi ni Todoke breaks, making it one of Japan's most popular Shoujo mangas today. It has numerous appeal points for those unfamiliar with female-targeted series and hooked me instantly. This review will focus on why Kimi ni Todoke is successful and why it ranks among the best Shoujo mangas to date.

The story begins with Kuronuma Sawako, a girl who is 'not normal.' A key aspect of Shoujo stories usually revolves around an 'ordinary girl' with 'ordinary appearances' experiencing 'unusual situations' and 'unusual love,' eventually becoming a 'special person.' This allows the 'ORDINARY female readers' to fantasize about these events happening to them, which is how traditional Shoujo stories work.

In Kimi ni Todoke, Sawako is an 'unusual girl' with an 'unusual appearance' who experiences 'ordinary situations' and 'ordinary love.' Comparing chapter 1 to the latest chapters reveals that Sawako's appearance remains unchanged from the start. What changes are her attitude and emotional expression. Thus, she was 'SPECIAL' and 'BEAUTIFUL' from the beginning. Moreover, she excels in studies, sports, teaching, with her only flaw being her lack of personality, shyness, and tendency towards hikikomori. This is the complete opposite of the typical Shoujo heroine and contributes significantly to the refreshing nature of Kimi ni Todoke.

Delving deeper into Sawako's character development, despite her beauty and versatility, she is extremely shy and surrounded by various rumors involving exorcism. She struggles with communication, purity, and naivety, lacking general social skills and ways to express her feelings, evident from the early chapters. As the series progresses, these hindrances diminish without losing their charm. Sawako's appealing personality remains intact, but her 'attitude' transforms significantly. This adds realism to the heroine, making her more relatable and endearing compared to other indecisive and thoughtless heroines in Shoujo series.

However, if there's a reason Kimi ni Todoke appeals to male viewers, Kazehaya Shouta is undoubtedly a significant factor. The situations he faces are unbearably cute and honest. They are 'VERY REAL,' except for Sawako's introversion. Compared to Kuronuma, Kazehaya is quite ordinary. Excluding his popularity in school, his reactions to ongoing romance and situations are incredibly realistic, relatable, and even cute by male standards. Watching him blush and react to Sawako feels like seeing oneself in love. Unlike most Shoujo male leads embroiled in rivalries or indecision, Kazehaya Shouta's love interest is solely Sawako from start to finish, and vice versa. This clarity explains Kimi ni Todoke's appeal. It's a manga about 'pure love,' rare in recent Shoujo. The author crafts this pure love through characters that break the mold and situations where characters react 'differently' than in other mangas.

Another crucial point is that 'pure romance' isn't the only engaging plot element. The relationships between Sawako and her new friends—Chizuru, Yano, and Sanada—are never sidelined. She's not just reaching out to Shouta but also her friends. It's fascinating how Sawako, Chizuru, and Yano, despite their differences, become best friends. Though distinct in personality, they share kindness, respect each other, and understand each other's thoughts. There have been no serious conflicts beyond misunderstandings, allowing readers to enjoy the manga relaxedly, free from the drama common in other Shoujo mangas. Reading Kimi ni Todoke always brings a smile to my face, and I've never been annoyed by any character.

It's true that Kimi ni Todoke has a slower storyline compared to other Shoujo series. It can seem too slow at times, but due to spoiler concerns, I won't elaborate here. However, the issue is addressed from the start—it's Sawako's personality. The story focuses on pure romance and friendship but ultimately centers on Sawako's character development. Despite the pace, we witness Sawako's evolution since the series began—her increased activity, better expression of thoughts and feelings, and her consistently positive, kind, and pure nature.

The art is brilliant. Honestly, it was one of the main reasons I started this series. Compared to usual Shoujo manga with huge eyes, long eyelids, triangular-headed male characters, and unrealistic expressions, Kimi ni Todoke's art style appeals to all readers due to its realism in character expressions. It's beautifully drawn without the usual Shoujo-style exaggerations, maintaining its own charm and uniqueness.

It's clear that many people, including myself, enjoy this series. Others, who don't, ask us 'Why?' The answer is simple: it tells a pure story of realistic love. We were tired of stories like White Album or Strawberry 100%. While other Shoujo series incorporate unrealistic fantasies to make their stories interesting, Kimi ni Todoke narrates the 'ordinary love' between friends, classmates, and family, striving to do so authentically.

Kimi ni Todoke is about an unusual yet naive girl facing ordinary situations and ordinary love. That alone makes it one of the most unique and well-written Shoujo mangas I've encountered.

Kimi ni Todoke was one of the first shoujo manga series I read when I developed a deep passion for anime and manga. Back then, I didn't form a strong opinion about it while reading or watching.

However, revisiting it now, I realize just how incredible this series truly is.

Story: 8
It's not a perfect story, but I haven't encountered anything quite like it in my years of consuming manga and anime. A girl notorious for her eerie appearance and behavior finds herself thrust into situations initially beyond her comfort zone—making friends, starting conversations, receiving gratitude instead of apologies—all because of the popular boy in class, Kazehaya. The narrative captures realistic emotions and love, staying grounded without being overly flashy or exaggerated. It moves slowly, yes, but offers a refreshing contrast to fast-paced, in-your-face shoujo manga.

Art: 10
The art style of Kimi ni Todoke remains my all-time favorite. It's visually appealing, avoiding exaggeration and oversized features common in many shoujo manga. Instead, it features softer, more realistic expressions. There's nothing negative I can say about it—it's simply outstanding.

Characters: 9
While I wouldn't claim the characters are flawless, they are well-crafted. Character development unfolds naturally and at a steady pace. They aren't indecisive or useless; each character has their own methods for resolving issues and knowing what they want.

Enjoyment: 10
I've always thoroughly enjoyed both the manga and the anime. Reading or watching never failed to bring a smile to my face. Watching Kazehaya and Sawako interact filled me with excitement. Their genuine reactions made the experience feel authentic, as if anyone could relate to the emotions portrayed throughout the series.

Overall: 9
I highly recommend this series. It's simple yet engaging, focusing on the romance between two unlikely individuals navigating self-acceptance, high school challenges, and moments of joy alongside Maru-chan.
