I read up to chapter 580, so I got a good idea of the series as a whole.I really like this story, and nowadays it's the only one in the Wuxia (Chinese) style that I follow, because it doesn't follow the common mistakes and clichés that this genre has.The characters are charismatic and human (they are not perfect) which makes the reading more interesting and unusual for this genre. Even more so as the characters mature over time, especially Wu Jian (Main Character/MC) who at the beginning is a weakling and a coward (but it's natural, he's very young and the younger brother, whoever has a younger brother knows that being beaten is normal, with due proportions), but it matures quickly and logically because things don't just happen out of nowhere, they have a reason to happen. The MC is not that cliché of a virgin character who doesn't know how to deal with women, here he learn how to deal with women and wants to have a more intimate relationship, like any normal man. His behavior adds more realism to the story and avoids the shonem and wuxia cliché (most of them look like a eunuch lol). And the women in the history are the highlight... they are all charismatic and mature over time too, each having their strengths and weaknesses, and they are useful for the story. They are not that trophy woman cliché (with no value apart from beauty/status), which only serve to be beautiful and generate conflicts for the MC because of it.I consider myself a veteran reader (although I still have a lot to read, my Kindle list says so), I've read from Wuxia novels, to Japanese and Korean novels, to more traditional books like A Song of Fire and Ice. In this novel, I consider the writing good and it's easy to read. I don't have trouble keeping pace and even though English is not my mother tongue, I rarely ever find myself having to Google words I don't know (with the exception of distance measurements in Chinese, but now I've memorized it lol). Of course the story isn't perfect, but even A Song of Fire and Ice has its flaws, nothing is perfect, but I have no doubts in saying that Severing Time and Space is one of my favorite stories right now.
I'm not going to go too in-detail for this novel, just because theres not a whole lot to write about.First, theres a lack of detail in pretty much everything, and that kills the novel considering it's a slice-of-life. This includes the food, the era, descriptions of characters, and the setting in general. I really don't know how any of these characters look. Second, theres nothing here to make you stay. The main character is a history buff who cooks good food and makes good wine. Thats all we know about him. The King visits him in his bar to ask various questions, and considers him a sage. He never says anything too shocking, but for some reason all the people around him treat him like a God. These are things that would've been resolved if the King paid more attention, but whatever.Overall, this novel is rather barebones and once the novelty wears off, it becomes rather boring.
HiI don't usually post review but making an exception cause this story has frustrated me a lot.Let's get over with the good parts. No grammar errors and i am thankful of that. Bad grammar is always a plus and the writer does his job in it. Updates daily and maybe twice a day still a plus.Let's pass on world background now. Well here the things start to get a little awkward(at least for me). The mc comes from a small small (maybe to small) of a village and has no idea whatsoever how big the world is. Nothing bad until here. The plot starts and he is in the run cause he has a forbidden realm. And here i lost it cause the mc is being hunted from the academy (for that mainly and for killing some academy mages but that happens later). He get's the training done and it's the typical mc that loves body refinement before the mage training. Lack of patience is seen at all the things that have to do with everything having to do with magic but in those related to body refinement none and are accepted as a rule or whatever (reminds me of the chinese cultivation novels horrible ones). The mc is rash and a lot, does stupid things sometimes and can't seems to find the solution where a logical one is at sight. Ex. at the latest chapters he moves from a valley to another to join the Shadowflame Society and there he participates in the tournament to get a chance to get noticed and the **** hits the fan. Power struggle from the clan that governs that valley(different factions to get the power inside the same clan have different ideas about the future 3 main ones).Confronted with the choices he has to make he gets an all time ''**** hits the fan'' situation by the one he choses. [In my opinion the best outcome the author could make there was to have him move to another valley. Whats the big deal his friend is not with him as a companion anymore and he can go to avoid more troublesome situation. But no the logical way its not the way of the story. At the end what would have cost him? Some more months to get to travel maybe a year but what's a year for the people who are mages and body refiners. They usually train for decades or a century to pass a stage meaning the live for far far to long.]Starting with the story development. I didn't get literally jack **** in this one. Like from all the basic info the mc knows nothing. The problem is he has teachers(albeit temporary ones) and even 2 gods(proclaimed from the 2 people he met no idea is it's true but from their power they seem legit) that confront him about his choice. His enemies seems to duplicate with every new place he visits and i was starting to think this would be another xianxia ****. The characters have their own personality mostly. Enemies are usually described as mobs and the others except the mc only a passing by cause why expand on someone that wont be in the next chapter. The mc however is total .......... (don't know what insult to throw at him anymore). As a mentioned early is totally rushing in situation and when he does think over a situation every damn situation flies away every time a fight starts. When given the chance to practice his realms and body refinement in the prison cell given from one of the self proclaimed gods [golden opportunity study for 100 years and become strong food included a new realm yes no enemies cause they have no idea where you are] what he does? He takes an overdose of ''real opening pills'' (10 or so) and leaves in less than a year cause he couldn't handle the loneliness that the place caused. What does he expect to have power handled in a golden plate here have some of this and this and a sprinkle of that one. Now as the author says taking to many of these ''realm opening pills'' causes you to do booom and all the place is like a red paintball battlefield (basically what happens to normal people on earth when they take to much of something without the booom) and the mc survives. How come ????/ Why???/ Just for plot advancement???/ Seriously it needs and explanation and a good one at that. Finally the fu***** forbidden realm that he is hunted for. Again we know jack **** for that one cause author mentions it like some times in the first chapters 1-2 times near the chapters fifty something and that's it. It has been like more than 100+ chapters don't you think he should look in it or does it even matter overall? Cause what makes the mc different from others is that forbidden realm (which is not as rare as it seems cause apparently tons of others have it). The power of the mc is mediocre at best typical xianxia ones. At a place you are a king with that power at another just a typical commoner or even a servant. 100+ chapters and nothing to wait for and my question is....Might this be the prologue but i didn't know???/ And finally what with the title the paragon??? of destruction??? The mc is nothing no paragon no being of destruction he is slightly above average as if possible. If you like that xianxia thing feel free to read with those fights and dumb mc that get power from just 'cause author want it. Finally i am less frustrated. Peace :D
What to say about this authorThe author knows how to describe its character just a little bit of grammar mistakes but I am a carefree reader. I just enjoy the story and go along with it. So if you are looking for war & military fiction you should read this one. I know it's like 2 or three chapters now but the author has worked up really to rewrite the story on the basis of people's critique. So, keep up the good work dear author.
