In the country of Liberal Leonce, at the age of twelve, children undergo a test to be chosen to go to the Maxim Cornelis Military Institute. Those who fail continue living where they are, mining for the colonial power of Swulla, and not knowing whether they'll fail to mine sufficiently and face the deadly consequences that might follow. Those who are chosen, however, enter the military institute to be trained in the art of animation, and serve both Liberal Leonce and Swulla in military duty whilst living far more prosperous lives. Of course, Maxim Cornelis Military Institute is ruthless in its education, and surviving there may very much be a greater challenge than surviving as a village commoner. Di, recently turning the fateful age of twelve, must test to be chosen and if so, survive the trials and tribulations of the institute all while trying to cultivate some measure of happiness.
