Jane rushed anxiously through the bustling streets, her thoughts racing. "Oh no, God, I'm late again!" she exclaimed inwardly. "Mr. Smith will definitely be furious." In a desperate attempt to save time, she decided to take a detour through a typically avoided network of back alleys. As she ventured deeper, she heard a heart-wrenching mixture of whimpering, thuds, and cries coming from an adjacent alley. It sounded like a defenseless dog being mistreated. "If I make a commotion, maybe they'll flee," she thought, hesitating for a moment. Stepping cautiously around the corner, she discovered a shocking scene. Instead of the expected empty alley, Jane found herself face to face with two figures, their backs to her, standing at the end of a dead-end. They were towering over a heap of what appeared to be several animals, all writhing in apparent distress. Normally, such a sight would terrify her, but fear had become a luxury for Jane, who felt a strange mix of adrenaline and disbelief. Her hands shook uncontrollably, and a barely audible gasp escaped her lips. The two figures, sensing her presence, suddenly turned to face her. One of them spoke, his voice dripping with menace, "You'd better not call the police." His teeth, unnaturally sharp, flashed in the dim light. "I'll handle the girl," another growled, indicating their intention to pursue her. Jane's mind raced, searching for a way to escape, but her options seemed limited. As the creatures advanced at an alarming speed, she knew she had to act fast.
