My dear African American mother found love with a wealthy Japanese gentleman. As I maneuvered my new bed's frame towards the window, I sensed an unwavering gaze upon me. Across the way, in the neighboring house, which mirrors our own, stood a slender Japanese boy. He appeared from his window, his tousled hair a testament to his recent awakening, as if he had just rolled out of bed. Despite the late afternoon sun, the surprise encounter caught us both off guard. He instantly tensed up, then offered a shy smile and a wave.
