Both baby chicks and certain gold-fish are novelty pets given out at festivals in some places in the world as they are fun pets that don't stick around so long that they require a long-term commitment. As far as how a species would have a 7-day lifespan, it's actually quite easy to imagine when you live simplistic lives and reach sexual maturity after one day's time. You live, you eat, you sleep, you mate, then you die. Nothing gets overly complicated because you are easily made aware of the fact that you won't have to live with the consequences long no matter what happens. You live your life carefree fulfilling basic needs until you die.
