Then again (vis-à-vis genre), it may be more psychologically honest that many characters are rigid in their consideration of future events. After all, there is no basis for them to have had an experience with the branching nature of probability. If they are in the frame of mind that events MUST occur in a linear and predetermined fashion, they would not really have the frame of reference to dispute that. We, as readers, have a privileged and omniscient perspective, so the divergence seems obvious. Still, this adherence to a linear sequence of events runs counter to their efforts to subvert the future of their expectations. One would think that desire to enact change would promote an openness to perceiving the discrepancy of events.

My point is, I for one would appreciate a more psychologically real approach to engaging with this trope. If protagonists must lock themselves into a linear mindset, portray the anxieties that are occluding their appreciation of their own impact.
