    Its fine to use "they" as singular in common parlance the problem comes with using it in news, articles, or anything that requires much more strict grammar to maintain clarity in broad circumstances. Thus, saying "Jimmy was a dragon. They were really strong for a dragon, who were already the strongest race!" is fine, but if you were to say "Yesterday at 12 P.M. in Shingoku Prefecture Jimmy, a dragon creature, attacked the headquarters of the world police. They used destructive fire breath to completely annihilate the base of humanity's last defense!" Even though you can tell through inference that the "they" refers to singular Jimmy and not the plural "world police" its unacceptable for that vaguery to be in official formatting as news/standardized writing has to be as CLEAR as possible.
