Little late but: A Certain Magical Index is the main series in the expansive Toaru (A Certain) franchise. It’s originally a light novel, which is far far ahead of the manga and anime adaptations. It’s recommended you read the novels (including the many side and spin-off volumes) for the full story.

The manga skipped the second and fourth arcs, and is behind the anime (but is doing a much better job with the arcs adapted in the third season).

As for Railgun, Accelerator, Astral Buddy, Mental Out, Dark Matter (I think that’s all of the manga spin-offs), there’s an extensive list of when it’s okay to start reading each, but you don’t need to read any of them in order to follow Index. They all take place before the last few arcs of the OT novels and serve to expand upon the world and characters, but the main plot all happens in Index.

I agree with Tenkyu on this one, so far as of chapter 12, Eirth's parents couldn't give a damn about their son nor did they ever really ever acknowledge they ever even had one, not once were they ever around for him nor did they ever try to. Sadith was left to bring Eirth up but she herself was also a child what kind of retarded parent relies on a child to bring up a child?

Be interesting to see how this story pans out I am loving every page so far...... Though it will be interesting to see if Hiro finally wakes up from his ego trip since I feel like from the moment they introduced him he has been on nothing but an ego boost, unsure about Mamu?(the name of Eirth's mother) will develop as it seems she was also on the same ego boost but seems to be the only one who realized that they had screwed up as a parent
