His emotional breakdown in chapters 173-174 is very powerful. How can you not sympathize with this poor boy? For real, he is a victim and his mindset never really changed.
And as the story shows, all the victims retaliate when they get the opportunity to. That's how the Joker movement started. It's all about revenge.
And what someone else here said makes a lot of sense too. His mind was reprogrammed. Imagine having to face your worst mistakes over and over again, but not through your own guilty conscience, but through the force of an adult, whom you should be able to trust.
