I actually prefer the mystical-oneshot-instakill skills, haha. But that might just be because I'm used to these type of wuxia/xianxia types of media.
Another reason I enjoy the "magic"/martial skills aspect (though there hasn't been too much yet) is because I read Red Storm waaay before this series, and the teacher of the main protagonist in that series is actually from this world, so it's cool seeing the different types of abilities from a worldbuilding perspective.
If you ever have the chance to read some wuxia/xianxia novels, you'll see how it's common for the main guy to start off fighting with there hands/swords. Later on, everything is escalated and they use flying magical swords/seals/bells and shouting out spells, rarely, if ever, using the mundane skills from their beginning.
