I don't think they are implying that she invented slings. They are probably just not a very common weapon at that point for the people of that world, who would rather just use a bow and arrow, much like how we would rather use a gun. The sling is an inferior weapon, but it gets the job done and doesn't depend on specialized ammo.
As for the sandwich, that wasn't invented until 1762.
