    you see it all too often
    however, time and time again the author implements these cliches to subvert expectations

    Its not like it would make any difference to have a few lessons right now, he'd need years of training to reach any reasonable swordsmanship level, and in that amount of time he'd get much stronger just by focusing on regaining his power as a magician. Dont forget he was strong enough to face the gods (even if he lost), so no human would pose a chance against him at full magic power.
