I kinda get your point, but I see it as: the bet and talking to the queen was so he could remain in the palace without drawing any attention to his power so he could continue observing the 2nd princess. Killing the wolf was both a test of his abilities and to increase his power in the new world (he still highly prioritises his own safety, just doesn’t care for anyone else’s) and the 2nd princess is the object of his entertainment.

What really gave me the opinion of him being an observer the most was when he just stood quietly in the centre of the hall while everyone was being massacred and just thinking about how it was going to happen eventually. He viewed the situation objectively instead of getting emotionally or physically involved, and took the princess away but let her do all of the fighting and only used his “detection” to remain in character almost
