When Nanao was a child, she was abducted by an ayakashi who inscribed a demonic seal on her body. Her arranged marriage to the Waka-sama of the Hakurenji family was usurped by her cousin Akemi. Forced to wear a monkey mask to conceal her demon mark, Nanao endured a life filled with hardship.
