The Earth Mother here clearly is a goddess of protection, sure... Priestess has used barrier to kill, but it was directly, it was more of an indirect use, and barrier is in a way... an offensive miracle, it is the "knife" Earth Mother gives to her believers.
But Purify Water used to purify blood when it is still in the body of a living being... that is clearly an infringement on EM's "portfolio".
Don't get me wrong though... I don't think Priestess did anything wrong, and I do think she should be allowed to use the spell like that, which she kinda was as clearly EM forgave her, at least this time, but in the end... trying to reason with DnD gods is a futile thing that more often than not... end badly.
