    he tried to work with them and they repeatedly spit in his face. It could be that he is naive in continuing to try to work with them or it could have been part of a plan to become a demi-god. either way he would still train and develop his skills while trying to bring success to the party for both plans to work. Compared to a vast majority of the "party betrayed there linchpin" the protag is way more naive, not to mention he did win in the end.
