Stories that have the protagonist fear altering the story only to eventually decide to do their own thing regardless of the consequences are fine... but it literally does not work here.

Why is he so hellbent on dying? Especially when there's no reason not to alter the story other than unreliable information.
Which is easily made up for by everything you gain by taking advantage of said knowledge now, rather than dying with it.
