So what I can get about the DL's gender thing is this: Demon Lord WAS a guy. However upon being reborn they became female. It's mentioned in the first chapter that their "ahem" was affected. DL can change into a more humanoid form any time they want, they even gave it secondary sexual characteristics like breasts. When Max asks about it, the DL generally doesn't understand why it's a big deal since they can switch at any time if they wanted. DL may return to being a dude upon reaching full power, however it's possible that their new form will just be more akin to a woman this time simply due to the rebirth effect but that's just my personal theory.
