Except back on Earth when they found the medusa mountain almost all of those were inoperational. Last time they received messages from why-man, it was telling them how to activate the medusa device, as its instinctive symbiotic protocol dictated. The medusa did not expect to be completely ignored or for the species to come look for the hub of the currently active medusas on the moon. That last thing triggered this conversation happening at all. The medusa back on earth clearly did not see any reason to deliver explanations, that's not often what they do in their life, this is a clear exception reached by extremely out of the ordinary circumstances.

Remember the full-on Kamehameha beam struggle back at the end of the Cell saga that finished off the original Cell? Both Gohan and Cell shot their respective attacks at each other on ground level, and what happened to the Earth then? Nothing more than an impression in the ground from the beam being shot and clashing in the middle, that's because once Gohan won the struggled he redirected his attack into space so the planet only suffered that minimal cosmetic damage.

So no with their ability to redirect their attacks into space it's not really a stupid idea.
