People complaining need to realize that they were literally children dealing with trauma far beyond their years and lashed and acted irresponsibly.
Also, Douglass apologizing is due to him being their father figure and mentor for them, he was their rock that they dint want to see get hurt anymore due to his personality.
As someone who was taking care of them, he feels like it was his responsibility to have known their feelings better. No matter how they act, he wanted to set things straight.
