    calling the entirety of mars chronicle a mere flashback is just not accurate. Maybe the word you're looking for is prequel? not to mention i don't know how you could argue for an enormous decline in quality just from your disliking of the story structure. The flashback is of stellar quality! I think you just aren't having your expectations met by the story so far
