The Aztecs totally were aggressive. They demanded thousands of people for human sacrifice from the tribes they conquered. Additionally, without Aztec priests betraying the empire and warning the conquistadors of surprise attacks(before even reaching the capital) the conquistadors would have died long before taking down the empire. (Brutally eliminating an empire that practices human sacrifice is morally justified, btw)
And youre right it does seem weird that no one thought to attempt more technical magic. Although, to be fair, the Aztecs saw no need for the wheel. The human story is one of stupidity, so stupidity in a story of humans, fictional as it may be, is not surprising.
