    Points made by Painkiller are mostly what i was thinking. They should have made charcoal in earthen mounds, then feed a tall bloomery with charcoal dust and the crushed ore mixture while having the natives pump air with african bellows from bottom and poking it with tall stick from the top. Charcoal dust removes oxygen from iron ore when burning(not very efficently but enough). That results in iron mixed with slag to from at the bottom, then you beat it with stones or even a wooden hammer over a stone anvil to seperate the iron. Then just forge it with charcoal and bellows. Quenching probably wont do anything, since carbon content will be so low.
