Dramatic, funny, action packed, heartbreaking, etc etc etc. This manga packs feels like crazy, and it also has one of my favorite female heroes in manga. She starts out pretty soft, yeah, but of course she does given that she's a coddled princess. She catches up super fast, though, and does so impressively. She recognizes her faults physically and intellectually, and works hard to fix them ("I need to become strong" ... "I don't want to continue being an idiot") and DOES fix them.
Reverse harems can be difficult in that even strong women might become more damsel than hero, but Yona isn't really falling into that category. She is continually becoming closer to being an equal member in their team, which is made up of (basically) dragons and people-more-awesome-than-dragons. Is she perfect? No. But she isn't sold as perfect and she doesn't insist that she is. She just wants to be (and works hard to be) a good person and do good in her country, a desire that's even allowing her to heal from her initial grief.
(Also: This manga isn't harmed by having some extremely appealing males. Yona's got an A+ harem. Shin-ah and Ao are the cutest pair in the whole of manga. Barring some future work of perfection, I will standby that statement for forever.)
i'm now in chapter 41 and thing starting to become exited <3
i love yona she treys her best to move on in her life and become stronger 🙂 she's not some weak cry baby heroin like other shoujo !! and HAK <3 i love him , so far my favorite :3 and i want yona to love him ^^ ohh and i also hope she doesnt forgive her cousin (crush) for killing her father -_- and hope she ends up with Hak too <3
It was really boring at first with the first few chapters but it gets a lot better after Yona's hair cut. The pace picks up considerably around that time. I like the characters but I'm not a big fan of the plot, which I'm still not entirely sure what it is. It seems as if the direction to this is messy and undetermined. The romance isn't advancing much atm but I'm only basing this off scanlations. I'm not a big fan of trying to portray Soo-Won as a sympathetic villain, I think his character overall is confusing :/

I haven’t read this in years, and I recently picked it back up, original statement stays in that the first few chapters is kinda slow the romance being even slower was kicker but once it got to the water tribe arc the plot felt a lot more faster and more developed. Maybe it’s cuz this is after years of not reading it and me being younger back then but I’m enjoying this a lot more now
Not much of good political, war, "intelligent plot". However, it's a nice a adventurey-fantasy story. Art is simple and not really my cup of tea, but it's pretty. My only peeve about the story is that Yona's 'amazing' courage seems to be highly exaggerated. She does change but her being 'useful' is still something of an overstatement. Her 'fiery glares' do indeed show impressive courage but they don't actually do anything.
I think everyone deems her change too highly.
Not really a political drama, as one would expect from the setting (king gets killed, revenge, usurping the throne, etc). Instead, the author adds some melodrama about citizens who shouldn't suffer for whatever reason she thinks of so she can throw the heroes on the run.
Dont expect any strategies, plottings, conspiracy or anything otherwise smart coming from any of the characters.
Akatsuki no Yona is one of the best manga you'd ever read,,I got hooked in it from the very first chapters,,the story is Awesome,,the art is amazing,,the developement is very good,,the pace is also natural and decent not too fast and not so slow,,but what really amazes me is main character's (Yona) developement,,,from a weak spoiled princess to strong willed powerful girl,,and also her childhood friend (Hak) is so so cool and strong,,,,and the dragons are very amazing,,,so what really distinguish this manga is that every character has its own personality and look (unlike those mangas where u dont even know who the person is!!) and the main character developement (also unlike these mangas where the main character is always crying and waiting to be saved)
so trust me on this,,READ THIS MANGA AND YOU WILL JUST LOVE IT!!!!!
i like the weak to strong part of the main character
she is thrown from a world of luxury to a world of the common people
or worse since she is being persued
she doesnt complain and tries her best to become strong
the Hak, her choldhood friend and bodyguard is sooo cool, strong
and likes to see her struggle on her own
the only thing i hope for is that she
doesnt forgive her first love, Soo Won that killed her own father!!!
neverth less i love this story and highly recommend it
...for this manga
I really really love all the characters, and the best part of this manga is you see Characters EVOLVE especially the Princess who has gone a remarkable Character Transformation from the beginning uptil now and so has the other side characters namely Seiryuu and Kija
The author has created a nice little Fantasy World add sweet Romance to it coupled with epic action and you get this AWESOME MANGA
10/10
I really like this manga~ the heroine isn't all that weak you know, she is a PRINCESS. How many princesses do you know that can kick butt? Not many right? She is suppose to be spoiled. Crying after the death of her father is reasonable, in addition her CRUSH+Family member killed him, that's a shocker, of course she would be in disbelief. Imagine your dad/mom getting killed by your sibling or your cousin, not to mention the person you like. She grows into a very likable character, she is smart and intelligent. As you read more, it'll get better. So give it a shot one more time for the peeps who dropped this.
I love this series because I find the story have a good potential and the main chara is not annoying like usual shoujo manga 🙂
I'm having a feeling that this series going to be a quite long one... may be over 20, because so far it has quite slow pace... and I have another strong feeling that Hak might be one of the dragon too..
ah, I cant wait to read it through the end >.<
...you see your dad getting killed in front of your eyes by the love of your life.
I don't get that "she is so weak cause she cries after that"-hype... I get it, it's fiction, but I still prefer a realistic character development. Everyone but the most seasoned and jaded human being would break down after that.
And if you mean she is too naive and bodily weak - that will change.
I really like this series, if you like fantasy, adventure, reverse harem, bishies and romance plus a (future) strong female lead paired with an awesome plot and characters with depth (even the "villain"), this is for you.
Yes, it starts of with a cliche plot of a spoilt princess with the shoujo personality. But the character DEVELOPS. That's why this is a good manga. If you start out with someone who's already perfect to begin with there won't be any room for character development and what's the fun in that? I admire this girl precisely because she tries hard to break out of her upbringing and she actually GROWS UP. Give the girl some credit, she is weak, but she's not weak minded. It's impressive in how much she actually changes. Look, if you're one of those people who gives judgement within the frist couple of chapters, then leave, and don't read it. But I'll have you know you're missing out on one of the best character developing plots in manga.
